Chelios Belongs To The Red Wings, Not The Blackhawks

from Dan McNeil of the Chicago Tribune,

The only former Red Wing I want to see return to the United Center anytime soon is Marian Hossa.

As adept as the Blackhawks are at hosting feel-good parties, I’m taking a pass on Chris Chelios night when the limping Blackhawks host the Red Wings on Friday.

Great player? Indisputable.

Dedicated? More than anybody who ever wore a Blackhawks jersey.

Legacy? Always a Red Wing to me.

He played 10 years in Detroit. Nine years here. Red Wing

Kind of ironic the photo in the article shows Bob Probert dropping the puck at the UC in a Hawk jersey. Which team does this guy think Probie belongs to ?

This guy is dumb. Cheli is a hometown Chicago boy.

Zero tolerance here for honoring former Red Wings whose career path included a few drives down West Madison.

A few drives down West Madison? Oh, wait, I get it. Because Cheli didn’t single-handedly lead the Hacks to multiple Cup wins, his nine years of dedication to the Hacks organization means nothing. Got it.

On the other hand (and how ironic is this), the 19 attempts by the Trib’s Web site to plant cookies on my computer before I could read this trash, well, that’s just business. Cheli going to the Wings? That’s not business, that’s betrayal.

Got it, Dan. You’re a douche. And so is your cookie-setting Web site.

Scotty Bowman left the Red Wings’ “brain trust” to join Chicago. Steve Yzerman, who had spent the nearly 30 years of his entire professional life in Detroit, left his job with Red Wings management to join Tampa.

If you think either of those moves diminish their legacies as Red Wings in any way, you’re an idiot. Steve Yzerman could be Tampa’s GM until he’s 110 and he would be no less a Red Wing. And these are guys who CHOSE to leave Detroit, willingly!

Oh, but Chelios is a traitor because the Blackhawks’ soulless, stupid, cheap-as-hell management wanted to swap a living legend for a pair of late-round first-rounders and a mediocre roster player. Right.

Wow, nothing like throwing a guy under the bus for a playoff loss in 1991.

This guy is moaning about how Chris killed the hawks chances against minny because he took some ill timed penaltys.

Well, what he failed to mention is that in theose six games Chris had 1 goal & 7 assists to go along with 46 PIM.

I sure hope Dan wasn’t present for when the Hawks had a night honoring Eddie Belfour, because eddie’s stats for the same series against the stars:

4.07 GAA   .891 Sv%  20 Goals Against

So Dan who you gonna blame for the hawks losing in the finals in 1992 ?

Because that year Chris’s stats were:

18 gp   6 goals 15 assists 21 pts plus/minus = +19

Yet the hawks were swept in the finals 4-0 ???

I’m pretty sure the results would have been the same had the hawks played pitt in the 1991 finals also.

I don’t like the Hawks. Obviously. But this is a stupid article. I can respect what Cheli did in Chicago, and obviously he’s an Illinois boy as well.

He deserves to be honored by both clubs, in both buildings. It might be weird, but all of us on both sides, Wings and Hawks, have to accept that the fact he had such longevity with both clubs is really one of the things that makes his story so special, so unique.

Chelios is a Hawk, just like some dumb media folk try to portray Probie as a Hawk.Probert is a Wing, where your legacy is greatest is what you are remembered as.

Not like Cheli didn’t play “a few” years for Montreal and win a Cup there or anything either.
