Chad LaRose returns from semi-seclusion in Northern Quebec, or something close to it

08/07/2013 at 3:53pm EDT

Carolina Hurricanes forward Chad LaRose more or less disappeared after the Carolina Hurricanes' season ended, but (via Pro Hockey Talk's Jason Brough) LaRose explained his decision to skip his exit interview whe the Raleigh News & Observer's Luke DeCock managed to reach him on Monday:

I spoke with Chad LaRose on Wednesday from his parents' home in Fraser, Mich., where he's spending some time right now. As I wrote Sunday, LaRose had been incommunicado since his contract with the Hurricanes expired, but we spoke for about 10 minutes about his past with the team, his departure and his future.

LaRose's agent, Mark Guy, said Tuesday that he has had discussions with multiple NHL teams over the summer. "Nothing that has resulted in a contract yet," Guy wrote in an email, "but that is his and our goal." Regardless, LaRose said he plans to continue living in the Triangle, where he owns a custom-home business along with his brother-in-law.

A few highlights from our conversation:

On skipping his scheduled end-of-season exit interview with the Hurricanes: "I needed a cool-off period as opposed to going right in and blowing up. Nobody was happy we didn't make the playoffs again. I took some time, cooled off, and then I went and saw everyone, talked to Jimmy (Rutherford), paid my respects and thanked them for the opportunity with them."

On whether he envisioned spending his entire career with the Hurricanes: "It changes a lot throughout your entire career. Of course, I always wanted to stay in Carolina. I love all the fans. The organization is top-notch. But sometimes change is good for people, too. I always envisioned playing again in Carolina anyway before my career is up."
