Four veteran players are penciled in as of today. Notice that was penciled, as in, easily erased.
Peca, Sergei Fedorov, Manny Malhotra and Jiri Novotny are the four, and none are truly No. 1 centers in the NHL.
Fedorov, now 37, could be a good No. 2. Peca is an elite No. 3. Malhotra and Novotny, on a good club, would be No. 4s.
But here’s the wrinkle. Early on in camp, the Blue Jackets will give Dan Fritsche, Gilbert Brule and Derick Brassard a look on one of the top two lines, likely letting them each play two of the first four exhibition games in such a role.
