Pretty sure what is about to be said at the podium is not what we wanted to hear.

NOPE!!! RW as I have said all along The retards that lead the NHLPA wanted to “Get Bettman” & Fehr is a Narcissist & thinks he is the smartest person in any room he walks into !

Now they will lose a season of a very short career & will except a much worse deal next season

So from Elliotte’s update it looks like they’re very very close. That’s the first time I’ve seen agreement applied to multiple non-trivial things.

& Fehr is STILL Pulling Brinksmanship, He KNEW that the “Moderate” owners had left because they were Pissed & done with him & the NHLPA & He goes” awwww What a shame they were not here to look at are new proposal” in a PC

Guys, I’d caution everyone against hearing only Fehr’s side. Owners/Bettman totally blew off this meeting/proposal by leaving here./strong]

Fehr: “We hope and believe and expect this should put us on the road to a quick settlement.” But makes BIG exception for “transition” issues

Everything is PR. The reality is both sides have their own issues that they can’t really budge on.

And the owners have rejected.

Here we go, they have now made it official they will wait until the union cracks, be that next month or two year from now.

Hockey Armageddon starts now.

Fehr: “Advised in a voice mail that moves players made were not acceptable, that there was no reason for owners to stay.”

Well MJPalis you’re the One believing the PR BS from Fehr

The owners don’t care about playing this year too much because only around 8 of them make money from hockey ops.  A few of them will miss the games on their bottom lines, but not enough of them.

The players don’t care about playing this year because they are all idiots with no comprehension of math or recollection of history.  They don’t understand that by not playing all they are doing is a) costing themselves all the money they’d be making now and which they will never recoup and b) costing themselves money in the future from whatever damage is done by another lost season.

I am routinely surprised by how stupidly people can act when they function from emotion rather than rationality.  I suppose I shouldn’t be, especially with regards to the NHLPA, but I’ve just never gotten a sufficiently diminished opinion of their collective intelligence.

I think I just need to take the floor off my level of expectation and, moving forward, just assume that there is literally nothing too stupid for the NHLPA to do.

Little thing called common sense with a Chaser of knowledge of economics, When half the league is either losing money or barely making money that is not a template for success.

No matter what you think about the expansion into the Sunbelt

Some would say I have no knowledge of either common sense or economics. But there are plenty of people that I know who have both who think there is plenty of room to go around.
It’s worth pointing out that it’s wrong to blame the non-traditional markets. There are plenty of places losing money because they used to be doing well. Look at St. Louis. It used to be a stronger market when the Blues made the playoffs for 20 some odd straight years. Look at what happened to the Islanders franchise.
Some teams are doing better than ever before. Some are teetering, and it’s not just Phoenix and Columbus. It seems like the alternatives are to have something like what MLB has where only a few teams have the resources to be competitive, or to impose significant revenue sharing across the league. Someone has to bear the costs.
Should it be the players? They have been the beneficiary of huge lopsided contracts handed out across the league by teams that don’t see terribly willing to see it through. A lot of the players are making WAY too much. I think until you can keep owners from handing out contracts like that, they’re not going to fix the problem. You could keep a much lower cap and delink it from revenue. Or decide what it will be on a year to year basis.
But part of the problem I think is that the NHL’s brand has been damaged. Part of this is just because the NBA and NFL have become harder for the NHL to compete with in the states. But part of it rests on franchises being given to criminals (Boots Del Biaggio, John Rigas), kooks (Charles Wang) Or people who just weren’t ultimately that interested in being NHL owners (everyone involved in the Thrashers saga). What I’m saying that this is a systemic problem for the League, and it takes a lot more than the players making less money to fix, although that’s part of the problem.

I see nothing has changed in the NHL’s negotiating tactics. speaking out of both sides of their mouths.

They started down the road to discredit Fehr a couple of weeks ago.  Looks like it’s working.  Somewhere, Frank Luntz is laughing at how easy this was.

So remember when this was about “fundamental economics”?  Now it’s about five-year contract lengths?  Sure.  What are the players getting out of this again?
