Immediate reactions:
What the hell?
Are they overcompinsating for Brett Sutter’s recent transgression?
Are they sick of hearing insinuations about prefferential treatment for Brett Sutter being a Sutter?
Is Daryl Sutter trying to go down in the biggest inferno he can create?
Why? Another trade coming?
Is Hagman & Stajan all that’s left now from the Phaneuf trade?

And thus, Brett Sutter is swept under the rug

So, the Leafs/Cgy trade has now become:

Phaneuf+Aulie+Sjostrom+Sutter for Stajan+Hagman+Mayers+Kostopoulos+Babchuk?

That’s not looking too good for Calgary, IMO.

It wasn’t good for CGY in the first place!  Everyone in TO knew Stajan was no good, and we knew White was replaceable.  Mayers is at best a 4th liner, if an NHLer at all.  Hagman was the only skill that left TO in that trade…  and he only has good spurts.

I think Babchuk is a decent player though, better size than Whitey and Kostopoulos is a decent skater, though still a 3rd/4th liner…  Possible another trade to come?

I’m just trying to process that two of my fantasy team defensemen (says something about my team) were just traded for one another.  I guess neither will be in the lineup now tonight.  Thaaaanks.

Mayers is not with the team anymore, he left in the offseason as a FA. They are saving about $1 Mil in salary as well. With Kotalik coming back soon. They need the cap space and they have a plethora of D-men up. White was going to be a FA at the end of the season anyways…I thought he would have been flipped at the deadline.

Seems more of a lateral or backwards move…..not necessarily forward

Sure, White is UFA at season’s end and with Gio signing a long term extension there wasn’t much cap space for him but surely if the Flames held on to him a bit longer they could have gotten a better return. An enigmatic D-man that will probably wilt under the glare of a Sutter, yet another grinder that increases the average age of the team? That’s all we get for White who is a solid top 4 guy on most teams? Seriously? Ugh.

I’d just like to add that signing Stajan to that ridiculous deal in the summer was also a huge mistake. The guy is a bum, total whiff on D.Sutter’s part.

Babchuk is also a UFA at the end of the season, and if the Flames wanted to deal a defenceman at the deadline, they could always deal Babchuk. He’s really more of a guy that teams will be looking to add then anyways.

Moreover, he could help the flames more right now. They’ve already got a couple of horses they can ride in terms of minutes, but Babchuk should help their powerplay. Kostopolous gives them depth, and it deals with the Sutter factor.
