Glad the Wings did not bite on this.

I overestimated what he’d get or ask for. This is surprising. And I’m very surprised the Wings wouldn’t bite at this deal or even a little more.

Well at least 3 teams in Detroit’s division didn’t get significantly better in the span of an afternoon. Wait…shit.

I wonder if there’s anyone who wants to play for the Wings.

Yeah, they could’ve gotten better instead of staying mediocre.  Whew!

No doubt in my mind the Wings were the ones who had the 7 year 35 mil-ish deal turned down. How on earth is WSH more desirable than DET?

In the end it’s probably good we didn’t massively overpay for Niskanen, but still makes me wonder how the Wings missed on EVERYONE who was a realistic USA target.

This is one of the most disappointing July 1sts in awhile.

Hopefully this means Sproul, Marchenko, and Oullett will now be given every opportunity to secure a starting position.

Guess it pays ( $40 mil) to be a big fish in a small pond

Please let me know what a great signing this was/wasn’t in 2021 confused

The thing is Washington DIDN’T massively overpay him. He got less than literally everyone in the hockey world was saying that he’d get.

Detroit offered $38.5m over 7 years. While that doesn’t seem like a ton less, the fact that Holland low balled the top FA d-man right out of the gate, in a year when Detroit’s defense is arguably the weakest it has been in 20 seasons, tells you how out of touch Holland really is.

Derek Morris, baby!

So now Helene St. James is saying Niskanen said DET wasn’t a destination prior to today, even tho they offered 7years/38 million. How the hell is Washington somehow a better destination than Detroit? That does not compute for me.

In about an hour I bet we will be hearing the Kyle Quincey has resigned in Detroit because he is a “steady defenseman” with a “scoring touch” that the organization couldn’t find on the open market. They’ll talk about how he has been a consistent top 4 defenseman and although he isn’t right handed we are only two years removed from taking Chicago to game 7… jfc.

Looking more and more that way to me, too.  Sproul and Marchenko (both right-handers) are going to get some serious looks this season sooner than Babcock and Holland wanted.

I think we’re done for the summer.

Helene St. James ran a pretty scathing (about as scathing as the Detroit media gets) article about today. Pretty interesting that even the media in this town are calling this a red flag day.

Oh, the sweet sweet bliss of ignorance this post must have been before all hell broke loose a meer 2 hours later.

Guys are taking this a bit too personally. Little background on Niskanen.

Tippet coached him to a good year or two. Crawford took over and wrecked his game so bad he was nearly run out of the sport. When he got to Pitt, he was shell shocked and unsure he’d ever get another contract. The guy that helped him fix his game is the defense coach in DC.

He’s paranoid about coaches. He would not speak to Pittsburgh at all until they hired one. At the end of the day, he went to the org that had a coach he was comfortable with.

That’s it. Had nothing to do with the Wings. Short of hiring Todd Reirden to coach the defense, there’s nothing you could have done to ink this guy.
