Canucks Still Trying To Move Edler

from Jason Botchford of the Vancouver Province,

Finding a fit for an Edler trade would have been a lot easier before the no-trade component on his contract kicked in on July 1. That’s why you have to wonder how serious the Canucks really are here. Because just a few days ago, they could have traded him to 29 teams. Now, they have to find a fit where he wants to go.

Vancouver has had some strong offers for Edler and with good reason. He’s 27 years old, has size, and is a lock for 45 points a year. Even in an off year, on a poor power play, Edler scored eight goals in 45 games.

The most alluring part is that he has a lot of room to improve. Even at 27, there is clearly a lot of upside. Could it happen under Tortorella?

Or would the soft-spoken Swede who has dealt with Rick Bowness his entire career struggle to adjust to the in-your-face stylings of the new coach?

For several reasons there is significantly more interest in Edler than there ever was in Cory Schneider.

Blueliners who actually push offence have long been more coveted than goalies. Furthering that interest is his sweetheart deal.

Wonder what the Wings would need to give up for Edler…

Sounds like VAN wants a center.

Now’s you chance, Kenny!

If its more than a conditional 7th rounder and a bag of used pucks, it’ll be rich for Kenny’s blood.

Not too mention, Smith couldn’t be as completely lost this year as he was last year, right?  What do we need another dman for?

Yeah that ship has sailed.  If DET was going to get Edler, they would have already done so.  We don’t even know if Edler would consent to going to DET now.

I hope I’m wrong, and would like to be wrong but…

How about a first rounder?

Wait, Edler isn’t a Wings retread…

Nvm, he’s too rich for Holland’s blood.

If this story is legit, Gillis is the worst GM in the league by quite a large margin.

It’s pretty obvious he’s in full-on “soft European” panic mode. Probably been watching too much Coach’s Corner.

The Wings need to swoop in on this, ASAFP.

He obviously remembers who he just hired as head coach.

You enjoy broken dreams huh?

Emmerton and Lashoff for Edler. Throw in a second round pick if they get balky.  Two for one deal that opens up a roster spot but Wings eat a lot of cap space.

I’m having a flashback to 2008-era Detroit sports talk radio…

“Why don’t DUMBrowski just trade Inge and Clete Thomas for Albert Pujols?!?!

The issue here is cap space mandingo. Edler is $5M/year on a team that needs cap relief and needs a transitional center. I would have said Anderson, but people on here would scream.

Should have said, i would be fine with Anderson going if it meant they got a true offensive defenseman. An alternative would be trade Kindl or Smith. I’d be good with either. But again, i anticipate screams.

Fair enough, teldar.

I still think it’s going to take a lot more than that to get Edler.

A big, puck-moving D-man in his prime with a moderate cap hit?

That’s a serious asset.

Vancouver definitely does need Centers. Trading Filppula’s rights along with a 5-6 D-man and a pick or prospect doesn’t seem too crazy of a deal to make.

I’m pretty sure the Wings can’t trade Filppula’s rights anymore, since anyone can talk to him right now.

Throw in Quintin Berry to sweeten the pot! The guy’s a fireplug!

Ballard’s buy-out now means Edler is probably off the market.

That was fast.

I saw that. So go dreams of roster improvement.

Detroit made a concrete offer before the draft. Vancouver rejected it.

I’m guessing it was Filppula, White and the conditional draft pick they would’ve gotten if Philly re-signed Huskins.

I’d take Helm and Nyquist.
