Canucks sit Schneider…For now

The Vancouver Canucks sent out a Tweet that may have Canucks fans worried...

But NHL.com's noting of the recall duly notes that the Canucks can afford to be cautious with their #1A goaltender:

Schneider has appeared in 30 games this season for the Canucks, posting a 17-9-4 record with a 2.11 goals-against average and .927 save percentage.

The Canucks have wrapped up the Northwest Division and have games remaining against the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday and the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday before opening in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Update: Hmm...

If he’s a little banged up this makes sense.  Vancouver can’t move anywhere in the standings from now till the end of the season, so they might as well give him a rest.

VAN may actually want a look at Cannata, since they have nothing to lose.  The goalie prospect situation in VAN is such that I think they need to sort out some of their depth.  They still have Eddie Lack in Chicago.  Cannata’s been splitting time between ECHL Kalamazoo AHL Chicago not necessarily because Cannata’s bad, but because Joel Martin played like a monster most of the year in Kzoo and Chicago had Climie and Lack in the AHL.  Only so many game to go around.

Philly did this a couple years ago with Jeremy Duchesne.  He was in the ECHL, injuries ended up getting him called up to PHI so they could get him an NHL start and decide to keep him or not, because Philly had other goalies in the system and Duchesne’s contract was ending.

It is kinda’ odd though that Schneider responds that way and that it’s a bit cloak-and-dagger.  And Cannata has another year under contract after this soooo… yeah.  It would be an odd time to do this the more I think about it.

Does Cannata qualify as an emergency call-up, and so VAN has to invent an “injury” to a goalie maybe?

I guess we’ll know more about what the “plan” is if/when he actually plays.  I’d geuss it’s more about not wanting Schneider to get hurt in either of their last two games with nothing on the line for them.

I don’t know if Vancouver have used all their post-trade-deadline call-ups (calls-up?) or not.  I would imagine if he’s an emergency call-up they wouldn’t have Schneider roaming the halls, telling reporters that he’s fine.

They don’t exactly run a very tight ship in VAN though, especially when it comes to their goalies and media…

It’s probably a lot of nothing at any rate, whether it’s giving Cannata a look or saving back Schneider, so there’s no need for VAN fans to freak out at any rate.

Agreed.  They’ll have plenty of time for that when Vancouver chokes in the playoffs.

Minor modification for content.
