Cancelling The Winter Classic Sends A Negative Message

from Sean Fitz-Gerald of the National Post,

Three hundred and twenty-six regular-season games have been hacked from the schedule, but Marc Ganis, a Chicago-based sports consultant, said the fate of one specific game will be more telling than all the rest: “The Winter Classic has become the single most important event put on by the National Hockey League in the United States.”

And according to reports, that game could be removed from the schedule as early as next week. On Friday, the NHL announced it was cancelling games through the end of November because of its ongoing lockout of the players.

“It would be detrimental, but more for what it indicates about the season than about the one event itself,” said Ganis, president of SportsCorp Ltd. “Because if they cancelled the Winter Classic, there will be a greater perception that the entire season might be cancelled.”

As painful for me to say this as an outsider and hoping Detroit gets back on their feet, its not going to happen. It’s getting cancel because they should of started the groundwork by now, three major sponsors bailed out on winter classic and bettman and 8 owners are dangling it in front of the players and fans as a negotiation chip. it really sucks for everyone involved, especially the people of Detroit. It’s up to Mike IIlitch to save it.

Just did some looking around if the season were to start on Dec. 1st. If my count was correct it would be a 59 game season. An odd number, but its alot of game still so thats a good thing. And for Detroit atleast, twelve of the first fifteen games are at home.  Now wouldnt that make things favorable? Granted, we all stay home and watch on tv.
