Can The Boston Bruins Afford Johnny Boychuk?

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,

They still have to sign power play defenceman Torrey Krug and top-nine winger Reilly Smith, and they lost first-line forward Jarome Iginla to the Colorado Avalanche because the Avs could give him more than a one-year performance-laced deal.

They also have to resign their second-best centre David Krejci, also UFA next summer.

Can they afford to give Boychuk a multi-year deal, with a significant raise from his current $3.33 million cap hit? Do they have anyone who can take his spot with a similar skill-set? Do the Bruins think about moving Boychuk before h becomes UFA? Does Boychuk see what a reasonable facsimile player Brooks Orpik, 34 next month, got from Washington ($5.5 million cap over five years) this July and think he’d like a shot at the same gravy?

All questions to ponder.

I know… not likely… but id still like to see the Wings add a Dman, right handed or not, someone to fortify our defense and make up for Kindl/Lashoff weaknesses.

If the Wings were still in the West, a trade for Boychuk might make sense to the Bruins. As an Atlantic Division foe, it’s far less likely – but I can think of one scenario that just might work for both teams – Smith for Boychuk, straight up.

The Wings get a right-handed shot they can use on the power play. The Bruins get about $2M in cap relief and an incentive for Riley to sign a more cap-friendly deal than he might otherwise.

Maybe others who know more about Boychuk than I do can provide some insight. But, at least on the surface, that seems like a deal that might benefit both teams.

Johnny Boychuk is a huge and mean right-handed shootin’ mutherfucher on the right-side defense.  I think he can anchor 65DD real well.
