Camp Is Approaching

The Flyers have made a few announcements regarding training camp, which is right around the corner. First, they confirmed that the Flyers and Capitals will one again be playing a prospects game, this time located at the Wells Fargo Center.

Then, they announced that they have invited center Michael Nylander on a tryout basis to attend training camp.

“Hello again old friend”

Once the initial shock wears off, the announcement of Nylander attending camp shouldn’t come as that much of a surprise.

The Flyers have a history of extending these low risk, high reward offers to players in the past. The most recent example of this is the failed Bill Guerin experiment last year, which many thought might actually work out at the time. Though Nylander is getting up there in age (he turns 39 in October) and coming off a serious spinal injury, he still has a legitimate NHL pedigree and a chance to challenge for roster spot. This also provides some more competition in an already clouded bottom-6 picture, which is never a bad thing.

It’s a good opportunity for Nylander, as he gets a chance to revitalize his career alongside a guy with whom he’s had prior success. Via a Tim Panaccio tweet, Holmgren confirmed that thought, hoping “Nylander and Jagr get the magic back”.

In a best-case scenario, Nylander represents a chance to inject a veteran presence in the lineup at minimal cost. But if it doesn’t work out, the Flyers can cut ties without blinking an eye. Lets just hope a roster player doesn’t lose his locker over it.

The prospect game will take place on September 15th at 5 PM at the Wells Fargo Center. More information will be released as the date approaches, but tickets will be free of charge.

For those of you in the area, it’s a great chance to get a look at some of the Flyers prospects in an actual game setting against an opponent donning something other than the same crest. Last year, this was the first chance many had to see Bobrovsky in action, and all of the top Flyers prospects are expected to suit up this year.

In the past, the game has been held in Capitals country, so take advantage of a free show and show the new boys some love!

Dude, sounds like Jagr wanted them to give Nylander a tryout.

Aaaaaand the prima donna act starts already. Just kidding. Maybe.

99% this would just be a no-risk shot in the dark and not a player demand, but time will tell.

Although, if you can find a pre-Ovechkin Capital fan, ask them about the time Jagr insisted George McPhee trade for Kip Miller because his given linemates weren’t good enough in his eyes. And Kip Miller was, apparently.

Nylander is a free roll of the dice. If he comes in and earns a spot, the team is stronger. If not, there’s no cap hit or other issue.

Yep. Personally, I was hoping they might give Chris Drury a go on a tryout basis, but this might put that out of the realm of possibility

I don’t know if this is necessarily Jagr’s doing at all, but it seems to be the best chance Nylander would have at another NHL career if there are some guys in his corner. if it doesn’t work out it’s of no concern to the Flyers, they can just let him go

You’re probably right. The only reason it caught my attention is that Jagr has demanded his team acquire one guy or another on at least one other occasion (Miller in Wash…maybe Lang as well…Leonsis has *****ed about this on the record somewhere)...possibly two, as I’m not quite sure how Straka went from being a 4th liner in LA to a 1st liner in NY overnight.
