Burns Extended By San Jose

via Sharks.com,

San Jose Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club has signed defenseman Brent Burns to a five-year contract extension.

“We are thrilled that Brent has stepped forward and made long-term commitment to the San Jose Sharks, his new teammates and our fans,” said Wilson. “When we acquired Brent, it was our intention to make sure that he remained an important piece of our organization moving forward and we are very pleased that we have been able to do that. As an elite-level defenseman who is just entering his prime, we are looking forward to meshing Brent’s skills with our existing core group.”

Five years, $28.75 million for Burns. An average of $5.75m per season. That according to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period.

This is either going to be a bad overpayment or a fantastic deal.  If I had to choose one over the other at this point in time, I’d say it’s a good deal.  Let’s see if Burns can live up to it.

First thing I wondered is where they were trading him. But that’s just snark talking.

Seems like it’ll be a decent deal.

I’d be a lot more comfortable with Burns at 5.75 than I would with Ehrhoff or Wisniewski (especially Wisniewski) at 6.
