Burke vs. Cherry

from Joe Warmington of the Toronto Sun,

Has Toronto Maple Leafs boss Brian Burke had enough of Don Cherry?

An insider told QMI Agency Burke is tired of Cherry criticizing his team — in particular, his coach — and he is contemplating asking for a meeting with CBC brass to complain.

“He is furious at the comment Cherry made about Ron Wilson not applauding for the troops and for other things too,” said an insider. “He is fiercely loyal to his guys.”

On Jan. 14, Cherry mentioned during a broadcast that visiting New York Ranger coach John Tortorella applauded when the troops were introduced at a recent Armed Forced appreciation game at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto.

He also called a clapping Leafs assistant coach Rob Zettler “a good Canadian boy.”

But he said Wilson and other coaches “couldn’t have cared less.”

That’s Brian Burke in a nutshell.  Caring too much about things that don’t matter while everything that’s important doesn’t get any attention.

Yeah, Brian, you go after Don Cherry.  That’s really important.  It really has a lot of impact on anything else in the world.

On the other hand, mayyyyybe if the Leafs had made the playoffs since he’s been GM or if they were even in the playoffs were the season to end today, what a blowhard doofus like Don freaking Cherry said wouldn’t matter.

But, yeah.  Go ahead and make a big stink about something that’s completely irrelevant, Brian.  That’s a great use of your time.

Don Cherry was blatantly trying to stir up resentment towards Wilson, by manipulating video. Don was playing the Canadian vs American issue by emphasizing Wilson’s supposed disrespect to Canadian troops. That is a pretty damaging slur by Cherry and one that can’t be ignored when viewed by millions of Canadians. The proof of his intent was his comment about “good Canadian boy” to emphasize the fact Wilson and the other assistant are American. Being accused of not supporting Canadian troops in this context is very damaging to Wilson and can’t be ignored.

Well, if Cherry ends up getting Wilson fired, do the ends justify the means?

Cherry misrepresenting a situation and stirring resentment with bullshit jingosm?  That’s different.
Burke actually has a job, and this isn’t it.

Oh, the horror.  Someone in sports media misrepresnting an issue.  My God.  This has never happened before.

Don Cherry has been doing exactly this to dozens of targets over his whole career.  This is neither new, nor novel, nor interesting, nor relevant.

For Brian Burke to charge that the windmill of Cherry’s credibility does nothing but make Burke seem smaller at the best, and woefully ignorant of reality at the worst.

Brian Burke whining to Cherry or to CBC or to Twitter or to Bettman or to you name it isn’t going to shut Cherry up and make Cherry start suddenly caring about accuracy, fairness, or baseline intelligence when it comes to commenting about Toronto.

Winning will do that.  If Burke was running a team that was in the playoffs and winning rounds and contending for division titles, Cherry would be right there extolling his virtues pom-poms and all.

When you suck, like Burke’s Leafs have done before he got there and now three plus years after he has arrived, you’re going to get this kind of criticisms.

Win more, Brian.  Whine less.
