from Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen,
Ottawa Senators general manager Bryan Murray expected his team to be far better than a .500 hockey team.
“Obviously, we’re not totally happy with the way we’re playing,” Murray said following Wednesday’s practice at the Canadian Tire Centre. “Standing-wise, we’re okay, but we should be playing a better game. We find ourselves scrambling, some nights, so much in our own end. It shouldn’t be that hard on us.”
The Senators own an 8-5-5 record. That’s good enough for second in weak Atlantic Division, but Murray recognizes improvement is necessary.
To that point, the Senators general manager acknowledges that veteran defencemen Jared Cowen and Patrick Wiercioch — who have both received plenty of criticism for inconsistent play through the opening 18 games of the season – need to re-establish themselves as solid players.
“I think we have a good enough defence, but they’re not playing good enough,” he said. “Again, we expect more from Wiercioch and Cowen, without a doubt. I’m very pleased with (Chris) Wideman, the way he has come up and played.”
