from the Patriot Ledger,
‘‘It’s only one year we’ve been together,’’ said veteran winger Glen Murray, Boston’s oldest player (35 on Nov. 1) and, like Bergeron, an assistant to second-year captain Zdeno Chara. ‘‘You can’t blow it up right away. Let’s try it again, get this team together - add a couple things here and there, and see what we can do.’’
That’s about what Chiarelli did. The GM traded prospect Petr Kalus to Minnesota for Manny Fernandez to fortify Boston in goal, shipped underperforming winger Shean Donovan to Ottawa for under-heralded winger Peter Schaefer, and added toughness by signing free agent forward Shawn Thornton away from the Stanley Cup champion Anaheim Ducks.
‘‘I like the moves Peter made,’’ said center Marc Savard, No. 1 on Boston’s chart last season in assists (74, third in the NHL) and points (96, tied for eighth). ‘‘They were subtle, but we have ‘name’ players here already. He picked up a good goalie and a couple good forwards, and I’m excited about that.’’
