Just about 24 hour after Minnesota Wilds' Matt Cooke took out Colorado Avalanche Tyson Barrie with a knee on knee hit it would be Red Wings defenseman Brendan Smith with a similar hit himself on Bruins Brad Marchand, only this time after initial outrage at Smith for being reckless on social media turned on Marchand claiming it was a dive and he was faking it.
Michael Hurley of CBS Boston took note of the leg change as well and addressed:
BOSTON (CBS) — Brad Marchand has certainly taken a dive over the course of his career to draw a penalty. He’s even done it in the playoffs, notably against Washington in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals two years ago.
Though the agitating left winger hasn’t committed any such egregious acts in the past two years (likely at the behest of Bruins president Cam Neely), that’s a reputation that doesn’t exactly disappear very quickly.
When some, anyone in any position, has a reputation the precedes them it it hard to deny; however, that does not mean assumptions should be made as well.
“I tried to jump around him and he clipped me a little bit,” Marchand said of the hit from Smith. “It was just more how I landed . So it was the right call.”
Smith has not been making the best of decisions thus far in the series with the Boston Bruins:
