Bruins Continue To Roll Despite Lack Of Superstar

from Pat Pickens of Slap Shot,

For a league that has built its recent growth with superstar players, the N.H.L. has an interesting conundrum on its hands in the Boston Bruins.

After all, the Bruins are an Original Six team from hockey-mad Massachusetts. Their storied past is filled with names like Bobby Orr, Phil Esposito, Eddie Shore and Ray Bourque.

Boston houses one of the league’s most recognizable franchises, and the N.H.L. has recently sold the Bruins by the logo on the front of their sweaters instead of the names on the back. While Sidney Crosby, Alex Ovechkin and Henrik Lundqvist dominate the conversation when the Penguins, Capitals or Rangers are on, NBC paints Boston as “the big, bad Bruins,” even though those days are long gone.

Zdeno Chara is about the only thing big or bad on Boston’s roster, and his play hasn’t been all that great. Still, the Bruins have been very good especially of late.

Not sure which universe this writer lives in where Chara isn’t a superstar. He isn’t one of the handful of guys the NHL markets the most, sure, but he’s one of the best and most dominant players in the player.

Yea, writer doesn’t seem to know what he’s talking about…
1) how about Jagr? Sure, he isnt lighting it up like he used to, but he’s certainly one of the most well know hockey players of his generation.
2) how has chara’s play not been great? he’s a beast on defense, and i think he’s got like 11 points in 12 playoff games so far this year?

What a stupid, pointless article.

This is what I’m talking about with the Eastern Conference mentality.  They’re OBSESSED with superstars and the idea of them, and they’ll pay any price for them.  To the point where a stupid article like this can not only get written, but then also get approved for publication.  These clowns truly think a superstar is somehow critical to success, as if there weren’t a million examples to the contrary over recent memory.

East = Overpaid superstars, less depth.
West = Slightly more-reasonably-paid stars and more depth.

Is it any wonder the Cup champ will come out of the West yet again this year?
