Brooks’ Notes

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,

• Twice within six weeks, a Rangers defenseman has been cited for closing his hand on the puck in the crease, an infraction that calls for a penalty shot. Neither time — the first at the Winter Classic, the second on Thursday at the Garden against the Blackhawks in a game not even televised by NBC — was the call substantiated on replay.

A player either closes his hand on the puck in the crease or he doesn’t. There’s no gray area there. That’s a call — unlike goaltender interference, which has become as subjective a decision as there is in the game — that should be subject to NHL video review.

• The Ducks, seven points out of eighth place in the Western Conference as of yesterday morning and with five teams to pass in order to make the tournament, can delude themselves into thinking they’re in the playoff mix, but reality suggests otherwise.

Which is to suggest, yes, Teemu Selanne would look great in Broadway Blue if the Anaheim people and the future Hall of Fame left wing would agree in the next week to a lend-lease agreement.

more and I am sure some Detroit fans will take not of this from Brooks…

I am surprised Red Wings fans aren’t demanding that Joey MacDonald be inducted into the Hall of Fame, too.

Just another loud mouth New Yorker spouting off, nothing new there.

Not that Brooks will ever see this, but Osgood’s numbers: wins, shut-outs, Sv.%, G.A.A, are better than Billy Smith’s in the Regular Season, Post Season, Pre Season, and any other season you want to compare.

To use Brook’s own argument against him and his backhanded swipe at Osgood.

Darren Pang would have won multiple Cups playing net on those Islander teams.

If playing behind a great team disqualifies someone from the HOF then no better example exists than that of Grant Fuhr.  He could let in 4 goals a night and still win with those great Oiler teams.

If it were up to me, Osgood would be headed to the HOF.  But to suggest that he was better than Billy Smith based on stats is just plain nuts.  Totally different eras.  And if anybody thinks that Billy Smith was just a bystander and that the Islanders would have still won 4 Cups with Darren Pang(!), that’s a breathtaking level of ignorance not even worth responding to.  Obviously such a person never saw Billy Smith play, and never saw hockey in the 70s and 80s.

BTW, Brooks hates the Islanders so don’t interpret any comment by him as Islanders-biased.  He’s a Rangers guy only.

I’ll give this to Brooks: you could very successfully argue that closed hands on pucks are being called more often than “picks” thrown on opposing teams’ players trying to get to the puck when more than five feet away from it by defending teams’ wingers or defensemen. We’re seeing both “moving” and stationary “picks” and football-style tackling and wrestling return to the game, and it’s not as if one team is getting away with it more than any other.

And his Osgood stuff is just a vendetta. I hope that Osgood did something good to piss Brooks off back in the day.

To say the least. It would be like saying Geoffreon shot muffins because Matt Niskanen makes the radar gun heat up more.

If you’re going to compare Osgood to another goalie on stats, you need to at least pick another one who dressed like the Michelin man, which is everybody after about 1995. Not to mention that 80s pads, while far smaller, were also far HEAVIER.
