Brooks Orpik Today

via Tom Gulitti tweets,

Orpik said he spoke to Maatta after the game Saturday. Called him a "good friend"

Orpik called the hit "a bad decision".  "There's no denying it was late.'

"Hopefully across the League they'll start punishing other guys the same way."

Orpik basically said the suspension was fair. Accepted full responsibility.

I’m glad i don’t know him if he elbows good friends in the head.

Aww, cute, he “accepted responsibility” while also playing the victim card.

F*ck you, Brooks.

Actually, no.  Hopefully across the league they’ll start handing out even stiffer suspensions for direct shots to the head.

I’m not a fan of the player or the team, either team, but, while a little passive-aggressive and whiny, I didn’t think Orpik’s response, as it’s quoted/paraphrased, was so bad.

He’s missing three playoff games and that’s progress -  and he’s basically owning the consequences of the hit as they pertain to him. That’s better in my view than the guys who say vague, evasive stuff like: i’m not a dirty player, stuff just happens, too bad he’s hurt but I’m going to keep playing my game.

He’s right that the league needs to be more consistent and put more teeth, more regularly and predictably, into punishing guys who target opponents in the head (and/or aim to injure on virtually every check, see: Gudas, Dirtbag).
