Brodeur Wants To Remain A Devil

from Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,

It’s all been pure speculation and guessing from the outside so far, but, for the first time in his 20-plus years in the Devils’ organization the speculation and guessing has brought up goaltender Martin Brodeur’s name.

Brodeur made it clear today that he has no interest in jumping ship as the Devils head toward the most disappointing season in team history.

“I want to stay,” he said. “I’ve been fortunate to play on some great teams here. I’‘m not going to quit now. It might be the right way to think about it, but at the end of the day it could be out of my hands. But, personally, I don’t think I’ll be going anywhere this season or next season. I’d love to finish my career here.”

... So no regrets, other than our record.”

Yeah, that’s a pretty unimportant part of the game.  Glad to see he’s put that small deal in its place.

NJ is in a box here. Brodeur’s value isn’t that high but because he’s an institution in NJ they can’t trade him unless they rip some team off. As a Caps fan I don’t know if I’d even trade one of our young goalies for him let alone additonal prospects.

I think he’s earned the right to stay where he is, and I say that knowing every game counts and he isn’t at all what he used to be. Still, you cannot deny that, night in, night out for many years up until very recently, his teammates could count on him to be great. It isn’t his fault that owners/management screwed up with ridiculous contracts for other players and ignored gaping holes in the roster for years. It would be a sh***y move if they dropped him because of foolish decisions somebody else made. No, he shouldn’t play every game anymore, not by a long shot, but if he wants to stay in NJ until retirement, I say let him stay. He earned that distinction a long time ago.

Just my two cents.
