With an odd number of games between most teams, it seems like its going to be complicated to determine who gets the extra home game.

And while its not as big a concern in the east, with the greater travel distances in the west, this is could be a big deal for some teams.

Yay. I waited this long to watch Detroit play Columbus and Edmonton for 23% of their games and none against Eastern Conference games?

I can’t help but wonder why the league decided on 48 games instead of 46 (four games against each divisional opponent) or 50 games (five games against each divisional opponent)

Because that would have made sense.

But assuming you needed 48 instead of 46, why not add 2 non-conference games or 2 in-conference non-divisional games instead of having the lopsided division schedule.

it might not matter, but i would hate to be the team that misses the playoffs by a point because they had to play the best teams in their division more then then the worst teams, or had to play the better teams in the conference twice on the road.

at least were complaining about a hockey season, i guess.

The reason it is 48 instead of 46 is because 48 is bigger than 46.

The reason it’s 48 instead of 50 is that playing 50 would add at least another week to a season. that’s going to have a really hard time getting done in a reasonable amount of time so that there aren’t venue schedule conflicts.

The season was supposed to end on 4/13.  If it starts on 1/19 we’re talking about 48 games in less than 3 months.

If the NHL thought they could squeeze 50 games in without killing everyone, they’d do it.

Even playing 48 is going to be incredibly dangerous.
