NYR are 4 points out of a playoff spot and they trade one of their best defensemen who is signed long term to a decent cap hit.

This one doesn’t make much sense

Their best young goalie who’s helped get them that close to the playoffs suffered a non-displaced rib fracture in a car accident in Brooklyn last evening.

They’re thinking “win soon” I’d guess by re-signing Kreider.

But it’s not going to be “win this Spring”.

And I’d guess Skjei was one area where they felt they could compensate cap-wise for Kreider and get perhaps a mid-round 1st (Toronto’s) for a good D but one they didn’t see as important long-term.
