Brad Richards Is Not Joe Thornton

Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News answers some emails…

“Why don’t the Stars just offer Brad Richards an extension for the same amount that the Sharks just gave to Joe Thorton (three years at $7 million a year)? It wouldn’t increase their overall payroll from this year and besides, what are they going to do with the cap space if he leaves?”

HEIKA: ...my guess is that Richards would not take that.

Thornton suggested getting the extension done and said he wants to stay in San Jose for the rest of his life. As such, he didn’t mind giving up the possibility of free agency and also lowering his salary from $7.2 million a year.

Richards (who makes $7.8 million this year) could be the biggest fish in free agency in the summer and also could get the chance to choose where he plays. Why would he give that up when we don’t even know if this team will have a new owner or what that new owner will want to do?

more Q & A regarding the Stars…

If you were in his shoes, would you sign for three years, $21 million? I can assure you that your agent would not recommend it.

Campbell looked nervous last game I saw him play Saturday in Plymouth. I think he will be fine once the team starts to gel. Spits turnover was huge with so many last years players now in NHL, AHL or traded for other players. His teammates didn’t exactly help him scoring only one goal against the Whalers Saturday, didn’t matter who was in net for Windsor that night.
OHL is a big step up talent wise from what he was used to playing against and once he settles down mentally I’m sure he will improve quickly.

“Brad Richards is not Joe Thornton”

You’re right…. Richards has a Stanley Cup and Chokin’ Joe hasn’t been able to lead his team anywhere even close.
His teams have only won 5 playoff series in 12 years: booted in round 1 five times, round 2 four times and when he finally made it to the Conference Finals, they got swept.  And to think I used to have hope for this guy.

sean you’re right, but Richards doesn’t just have a Stanley Cup… He has a Conn Smythe trophy for playoff MVP. Snow Thornton was happy to take a hometown discount where life is relatively easy for hockey players.
