Boston Sends Rights To Carl Soderberg To Colorado

BOSTON, MA – Boston Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney announced today, June 25, that the team has acquired a sixth round pick in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for the rights to Carl Soderberg. The 2016 sixth round pick is Boston's natural selection, as it originally belonged to the Bruins and was part of the March 2, 2015 trade between Colorado and Boston that brought Max Talbot and Paul Carey to the B's in exchange for Jordan Caron.

Soderberg has played in 161 regular season NHL games - all with Boston - and has registered 29 goals and 65 assists for 94 points. The 29-year-old also skated in 14 playoff games with 1-5=6 totals.

Soderberg was drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the second round (49th overall) in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. He was acquired by the Bruins from St. Louis on July 23, 2007 in exchange for Hannu Toivonen.

Soderberg will be an unrestricted free agent on July 1, 2015.

You have to think Ryan O’Reilly is headed out the door after this move.

I hope ol’ Kenny is kicking the tires on that one. I think O’Reilly could be a really strong piece down the middle for the Wings for many years.

Tweet from Mike Chambers, Avs beat writer…

To elaborate: #Avs desire 1st-round pick, current player/prospect(s) for O’Reilly. Few teams willing to give up a 1st, unless they have many

Seems like a lot for a rental.

Sounds like a steal to me, as long the Avs are willing to let that team work out an extension with him first.

The only thing that makes that a hard deal to swallow is that he isn’t signed long term. He’s already made his demands to the Avs known, at least as far as his asking price.

If we could sign him to a long-term deal, I’d absolutely do a 1st + player + prospect.

Very much so… though it sounds like a far too complicated deal for certain GMs to work out.

Gotta wonder if Soderberg will sign.  At this point he’s probably gotten used to the idea that he’s going to test the market.  In order for Colorado to sign him before the 1st you’ve got to think they’d have to overpay for him.

Also, does anyone think Colorado would deal O’Reilly to Detroit?  Holland had to go through a third party to get Quincey…

I don’t see why not. I know there’s the old rivalry still in people’s minds, and the Stadium Series game this year, but the onus is on Sakic to get the best return he can on O’Reilly. If Detroit gives him the best offer, there’s no reason not to take it. Detroit and Colorado are in separate conferences, and the rivalry is well in the past at this point, aside from the fact that many of the players are in the front office now.

Colorado needs some help on D, and Detroit has D-men that could be used as bait. Oulette, Smith, Kindl, we have guys of various talents and interest that could be enticing to a team with a weak D-corps.

Colorado refused a first rounder for Quincey…

DETROIT needs help on D, and if Colorado wants D for O’Reilly I’m sure they can get better offers than the crappy NHLers and u proven AHLers that Detroit can offer.
