Boston Bruins Announce Multi-Year Contract Extension For Claude Julien

BOSTON, MA – Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli announced today, Sunday, November 2, that the club has signed Head Coach Claude Julien to a multi-year contract extension. Chiarelli made the following statement on the extension: "This morning, Claude and I finalized the terms of a multi-year contract extension agreement for him. We have worked at this for a few months, but there was never any doubt in my mind that this would get done. Claude is one of the top coaches in the NHL and has consistently shown a passion for winning through his coaching. Coaching is a difficult profession at the best of times and what Claude does in implementing structure in his systems, and having a solid defensive foundation while allowing freedom in offensive play is no easy task. During his time with the Bruins, he has excelled in maintaining this difficult balance, and his longevity here speaks volumes. He has coached the Bruins to a Stanley Cup and a Cup Final appearance and our goal to win with him at the helm remains the same as we move forward."

Julien's record behind the Bruins bench is 317-171-65 in 553 games with a .632 win percentage. Julien is in his eighth season with Boston, having been named the 27th head coach in team history on June 21, 2007. Only Detroit's Mike Babcock (ten years) has a longer tenure with his current team than Julien. His NHL record is 436-257-10-88 in 791 games with a .613 win percentage.

The Bruins have amassed over 100 points in four of his six full years behind the bench, including the third and fourth best regular seasons in team history with 54 wins and 117 points in 2013-14 and 53 victories and 116 points in 2008-09. The Bruins were the top team in the Eastern Conference in each of those seasons and won the Presidents' Trophy with the league's best overall mark in 2013-14.

Julien won the Jack Adams Trophy as the league's top coach in 2008-09 and also earned the NHL Coach of the Year honors from The Sporting News that season.

His teams have advanced to the playoffs in each of his years behind the Boston bench and the Bruins are the only team to have gone on to at least second-round play in five of the last six postseasons. In 2011 he won a Stanley Cup Championship with the Bruins. He holds the club career coaching record for playoff games won at 57 and Boston's 53 post-season wins over the last six years ranks second among all NHL teams over that span (Chicago, 57)

Julien has coached at the international level, winning a Bronze medal as head coach of Team Canada at the 2000 World Junior Championship and a Silver medal as an assistant coach for Team Canada in the 1999 World Juniors. He served as an assistant coach for Team Canada in the 2006 World Championships in addition to serving in that same capacity for Gold medalist Team Canada at the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia.
