Bobby Ryan Signs With Ducks

via Bob McKenzie tweet,

Bobby Ryan signs in ANA. Five years, $25.5 million total. Done deal.

added 4:10pm,

ANAHEIM, Calif. – The Anaheim Ducks announced today that the National Hockey League (NHL) club has signed left wing Bobby Ryan to a five-year contract, running through the 2014-15 season. Per club policy, no financial terms of the deal were disclosed.

“We’re pleased to have come to an agreement with Bobby before training camp,” said Executive Vice President/General Manager Bob Murray. “Bobby is already a proven NHL goal scorer at the age of 23 and certainly has his best years ahead of him.”

Not to be a dick, but why does virtually every tweet from one of these hockey writers regarding breaking contract news end with the phrase “done deal?”

Does the league not officially recognize the deal until Bob McKenzie or Darren Dreger or any of the other Canuckistan Media Syndicate orangutans actually uses the phrase “done deal?”

Yeah, I kind of assumed that when you said he signed and gave the contract length and value, Bob. But thanks for the dramatic two-word sentence repeating what you just said. It really lends you and the entire situation some gravitas.

He/they say that when they know for a fact that it’s a done deal, when they don’t, they say something like “I’m hearing the deal is…”

It’s the difference between someone tweeting “_____ signed for 5yrs $20 million,” and having it confirmed by the player/agent/team/NHL/NHLPA.

An example from Puck Daddy today:

So the Ryan deal is now official after last week’s false alarm that would have had Ryan making more than that duo. Larry Brooks of the NY Post reported last Tuesday evening that Ryan and the Anaheim Ducks had “reached agreement with Ducks for contract believed 5 years for approximately $5.5 million per season.” But Helene Elliott of the LA Times passed along an on-the-record denial from Bobby Ryan’s camp saying no deal was done with the Ducks.

Fact-checking means done deal. Or not.

To separate the rumors from the, pardon me, done deals.

My point is, doesn’t the fact that he signed the contract by definition mean it’s a done deal?

I’m not talking about rumors.

Yeah, and they’re making a distinction between a signed contract, and “reached agreement with Ducks for contract believed 5 years for approximately $5.5 million per season.”

Anyone else find it odd he signed for 5.1 per? Any significance to that number?

He held out this whole time to take one of the first contracts they offered him…

Oh, and it adds up to $25.5 over the five years, so there’s a round number for ya.

Well, “done deal” is usually used when it’s confirmed by the team/league.  If you go back to July 1st tweets (don’t do it, just saying “if you did”) there’s a lot of “word is” and “x reports” and “sources say”.  The “done deals” are the ones that are confirmed, not just reported by “league sources”.
