Blues Sign Cheechoo, 1 Year

ST. LOUIS – St. Louis Blues Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Armstrong announced today the club has signed forward Jonathan Cheechoo to a one-year contract.

Cheechoo, 30, spent last season with the American Hockey League’s (AHL) Worcester Sharks tallying 47 points (18 goals, 29 assists) in 55 games.  The 6’1”, 200-pound forward has also appeared in 501 National Hockey League (NHL) games over seven seasons between the San Jose Sharks and Ottawa Senators compiling 305 points (170 goals, 135 assists) along with 324 penalty minutes.

The Moose Factory, Ontario native was originally drafted by San Jose in the second round, 29th overall, of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.

I used to hate cheechoo when he was tearing it up because of how apparent his lack of genuine talent was.

Then I was glad when he fell back down to earth as a third/fourth liner.

Now I just feel bad for the guy. But good on him getting signed by an NHL club.

I agree, good on him for taking the reality check like a man, and working his way back up.

The fans will love this guy, even if he does not score like he used to he LOVES to shoot the puck and because of his bad skating (at NHL level) he tries 100% all the time.  He has some pretty nifty puck handling skill, e.g. the Mario between the leg shot he pulls out every so often is sweet.  He even scored in the playoffs w/one against the Avalanche, back when they were good.  Most NHLers do not even attempt such things.  I hope he gets his goal scoring mojo back.

Kid has a heart of gold.  A botched hernia surgery really set him back a couple years ago but he did pretty well on the Sharks’ AHL team this year.  Good 3rd/4th line pickup who still has a nasty shot.
