Blame The NHL

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,

The NHL has gone out of its way to manufacture the perception of a crisis with its unilateral decision to abandon realignment for next year while simultaneously launching an attack on the NHLPA for the union’s refusal to approve the plan without receiving the information it is entitled to.

What is clear though, after the league pulled the plug, is the reflex of so many within the media as well as the NHL’s fan base to throw the first stones at labor regardless of the facts.

What employee, given the contractual right to approve changes in working conditions, would simply waive it under pressure from his or her employer to meet an artificially imposed deadline?

Would you? Really?

@ Evil
Wow.  Nice rage spelling.  You sure know how to make yourself clear.
You know who I identify with more than the heart and soul hockey players?  Those fat cats upstairs.  Oh yeah.  They’re the good guys.
The NHL absolutely fvcked the players for 60 years.  It took court battles initiated in the wake of the WHA and two further strikes to recover a fraction of the revenues they were generating.
This isn’t about your ideology around unions in general.
If your performance could earn me twenty million a year, how much of that do you think you should be entitled to?
I guess in your case, whatever the guy wanted to spare as you grovel at his feet, licking his boots in gratitiude.

Actually, what you have said clearly shows you absolutely do NOT understand what happened in baseball. I don’t have time to address everything I should, so I’ll do the Cliff’s Notes:

- Baseball is incredibly strong today. It took a couple seasons and home run chase, and no doubt that was fabricated, but baseball is the only sport in North America that is even close to being on the same level as the NFL in terms of popularity, dollars, etc.

- Look up the history of collusion in MLB. The Fehr-lead strike was no fewer than 100 years of crap the players had dealt with coming to a head. Even after Koufax/Drysdale colluded against the owners in their contract negotiations and finally got the discussion on free agency rolling in baseball, the players arguably never really had true free agency until after the Fehr strike, because up to that point the owners had a “gentleman’s agreement” behind closed doors about how they would pursue free agents. Even today, baseball is all about years of team control—unless you are one of the three or four largest market teams, your club lives and dies with how long they are able to retain high-end talent under team control.

- A union for professional sports is in no way analogous to a more standard union, like a manufacturing labor union, teachers union, etc. Unlike your average teacher or line worker, the players do have to deal fairly directly with the billionaires that sign their checks. Additionally, unlike your average line worker, these athletes possess a skill that is highly unique, and given the demand in our culture for entertaining sports, their skills are worth a lot of money. Corruption sucks, but you can tear down an organization because some corruption exists. If that were the case, we’d live in a lawless society with absolutely no institutions, public or private. We all take liberties we probably shouldn’t, even if it is just spending a few too many minutes at the water cooler.
