From Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune via Twitter:
#Blackhawks sign winger Patrick Sharp to five-year contract extension.
Sharp’s previous contract was set to run out at the end of the 2011-12 season.
Update 12:49pm ET: From Tim Sassone—
No money figures yet for Sharp, but can’t imagine his cap hit is more than the $6.3 million for Toews and Kane.
Update 1:07pm ET: TSN is reporting the added 5 year deal comes to $29.5 million—$5.9 million per year.

$5.9m/yr is very high. That’s more than Hossa even (Hossa Pout Watch 2011 in 3… 2… 1…).
CHI seems intent on burying themselves in cap hell again. Their big contracts are all long-term (none expiring in the next few years) which doesn’t give them a lot of wiggle room.
Only these Hawks could get rid of Campbell’s contract and STILL seem to be trapped by salaries. Hawks have learned nothing. It obviously wasn’t just Tallon to blame here as has been popularly theorized…

@primis
well, maybe Tallon wasn’t to blame for everything… but I do know this… they will just continue to get Tallon to take on all of their terrible contracts when they are in a bind

$5.9m/yr. for Sharp is a lot. He’s good but I don’t think he’s just shy of $6m good.

Sharp is good but $6 million? not much of a hometown discount.
