Bitz Faces Disciplinary Hearing

via NHL.com,

Vancouver Canucks right wing Byron Bitz will face a disciplinary hearing with the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety Thursday.

The hearing regards a boarding major Bitz received Wednesday night in Game 1 of the Western Conference Quarterfinals against Los Angeles when Bitz hit L.A.‘s Kyle Clifford at 12:12 of the second period. Bitz was also assessed a game misconduct on the play.

Watch the hit here if you missed it earlier.

Bitz- bad hit, not a star player, hearing and probable suspension.

Weber- star player, intent to injure, slap on the hand and released.

The Shanahammer has morphed into the Wheel O’ Justice. Boo-yah.

*facepalm.

If this is a suspension after letting weber get off with a fine, i will never watch nhl hockey again. This league is a joke.

He’ll be forced into cleaning the yard twice, sent to bed without any dinner and made to wear a skirt for a weekend.

That’s how damn serious this league is today.

If he gets more than a 2k fine I’ll personally fly to New York and shove Gary Bettman up Shanahan’s ass.

Complete BS that Bitz has a hearing and Weber doesn’t. Way to screw it up again, NHL.

Because it was such a clean hit that it was undeserving of supplementary discipline, or because Webber is getting off so lightly that you feel that it’s wrong to discipline anything else that might be construed as a head hit?  As nasty and visceral as Webber’s act was, it doesn’t have the injury potential that a check (1) from behind, (2) to the head, (3) into the boards does.

Anyway, Bitz is clearly going to be sitting at least a game given the fact that a disciplinary hearing is scheduled, so I look forward to seeing the Bettman-Shanahan merger that you outlined above.

At least boarding is is hockey-related, a bad hockey hit on the wrong place in the ice.

As for Weber? Lord, banging someone’s head against the board is forbidden on UFC.

(also, both can cause a serious injury)

“Hockey related?”  Yeah, I’m guessing that’s a pretty tough standard to define objectively when both acts are against the rules, so that’s why it’s never shown up in the rulebooks or on Shannyvision.  Certainly can’t say that fighting and hitting with fists haven’t traditionally been associated with hockey.  Pulling out a weapon on the ice, well then your argument might have some traction, particularly wrt legal consequences.  Anyway, I called out Webber’s act - the guy is a complete *#$%@& - so kind of a strawman argument.

Certainly punching someone’s head into the boards can injure, but momentum (p=m*v, my it’s been a longass time but you gotta love the physics…maybe we can discuss kinetic energy sometime soon) is going to be the biggest factor in any impact, assuming point of contact with the boards is the same so a 200lb body at motion is going to do more damage than a fist (with an arm behind it) thrown relatively slowly.

Two things that stand out:

For those who said Shannahammer would be biased in favor of the wings, well you’re wrong.

For those who said that only hits against star players get reviewed, well, you’re wrong too.

Now before the hate mail starts, know two things: I am no friend of the wings and I think both the star on star head slam (Weber on Zeterberg) as well as the scrub on scrub (Vancouver 4th liner hit who on L..A.?) should have recevied suspensions.  Then again, Duncan Keith got screwed on his, so be careful what you wish for.
