Bill Guerin’s Advice to NBA Players

From Mac Engel at the Toronto Star:

“I learned a big lesson: It’s not a partnership. It’s their league, and you are going to play when they want,” he said.

Today, Guerin has hindsight and his experience serves as a giant caution to any player who thinks losing a game, much less an entire season, to this lockout is a good idea. His message is simple: Get what you can; start playing; you are not going to win what you think.

“It is not worth it to any of them to burn games or to burn an entire year. Burning a year was ridiculous,” Guerin said. “It wasn’t worth me giving up $9 million a year, or 82 games plus the playoffs, then having a crappy year and being bought out. ... Guys in the NBA making $15 million or however much better think long and hard about this.”

Interesting article.Bottom line most fans could care less about the players income or the owners profits. The only thing that matters is if your team can afford the players to build a winner. The players have no real leverage. Player costs affects the competitiveness of your team. So lower costs means more money for better players. So if your team is unprofitable it risks the future of the team, in the end fans will side with lower salaries.  If the owners are willing to sacrifice a season they will win every time. Guerin has finally figured it out. I hope the rest of the players understand this ‘reality’.

I disagree. I fully respect the players’ right to earn a living at a disproportionate rate to the rest of society and I fully support their desire to not simply allow the NHL to treat its players like chattel who can be told to accept rollbacks and buyouts for the “good of the game.” I want to see my team dress the best lineup possible, sure, but as a big-market fan, I’m sure as hell not going to suggest that the Red Wings’ players should agree to the kind of CBA that benefits “unprofitable” teams like the Florida Panthers while tying Mike Ilitch’s hands behind his back. No way, no how.
