As is typical, Red Berenson shook hands with the opposing coaching staff and headed across the ice toward the exit.
Upstairs in the University of Michigan locker room at Yost Ice Arena, seniors T.J. Hensick and Matt Hunwick had a present for him. The game puck from Berenson’s 600th victory, which he then brought into the news conference.
In Berenson’s first try at the milestone, the Wolverines got ahead quickly Friday night to take a 5-2 victory over Northern Michigan.
In the final minutes, the student section chanted Berenson’s name, and a congratulatory message was displayed on the scoreboard as the clock ran out.
“It’s been a long time coming,’’ said Berenson, who is 600-286-63 in 23 seasons at Michigan. “It’s nice to do it at home.’‘
