Bettman Deserves More Credit

From Tim Campbell of the Winnipeg Free Press (via Canada.com):

It raised a good point — what exactly has Bettman done to be so disliked, even hated, by so many Winnipeg and Canadian hockey fans?

Move Winnipeg and Quebec franchises to the U.S.? Fine, but last time we checked, the fact that there were no potential owners, terrible arenas, a low Canadian dollar in those days was not Bettman’s fault.

Neither are rainy days and losing lottery tickets but there is no shortage of people who act like the NHL commissioner ruins their every day.

Fast forward to 2011 and it is incomprehensible how Bettman can be reviled for ushering the league back to Winnipeg in 2011.

But that perception continues, in many media outlets, in many instances during the May 31 celebrations, even in a Winnipeg hair salon which proudly boasted in early June that Bettman was not welcome.

It’s logic at its wackiest.

I’ll take the tin foil hat off for a second and admit that I think the trickiest thing for Bettman is that to do what is best for the NHL as a whole, he has to do things that alienate some/most teams and/or their fans oftentimes.  So to the extent that I’ll own to that I can cut the guy some slack.

But I know he still has it in for the Wings… the hat looks better on my head anyway.  Suck it Gary.  Ass.

The Garden Gnome deserves every bit of the hatred which many fans feel for him.  He has made moves which have injured hockey.  Who except a total maniac would intentionally build new franchises and move teams into such hockey hotbeds as Miami, Dallas, and Phoenix.  The only hockey fans in Arizona wear the Winged Wheel and cheer for the visitors two games a year.

Not one soul in Atlanta shed a tear when the Thrashers departed town.  Most Atlantans didn’t even know they were there.

He has allowed terminally weak ownerships to flourish which has put about half the franchises at risk of finanacial collapse.

I could go on in this vein, but the biggest sin he ever has committed is he is biased.  He showed it in 2008.  He extolled the brave Pittsburgh Penguins and how well they played, how he was humbled to be in their presence, etc.  He went on for almost 20 minutes about how he admired the LOSERS!  Then he presented the Stanley Cup to Detroit in a brief and most ungracious display of bias I have ever seen for the supposed leader of a major sport.

What a fornicating putz.!

And in addition, he submarined an entire NHL season just so he could put together a CBA that is killing small market teams, and which GMs with a greater than room temperature IQ were able to find holes they could drive semi trucks through in less than 16 months.

And then he’s played favorites with the advertising dollars of his league.

And then he’s gone out of his way to chase prospective owners away from purchasing teams, just because they don’t want a perennially 20+ mil a year losing franchise to stay where they perennially lose 20+ million a year.

And then both he and his lieutenant Daly have flat out lied when asked straightforward questions about the status of said awful franchises.

And then he stupidly overvalued the NHL’s television cache and got them yanked off of ESPN and into TV purgatory for the better part of a decade.

Other than that, though?  Bettman’s been just awesome.

What I think some folks forget about Bettman is who he works for - the NHL owners.

It’s his job to be the bad guy so that the guys (and pension funds) that own the teams don’t have to be.

To some extent, the level of hatred that’s shown to him is an indication of just how good a job he’s doing.

1) HockeyinHD makes a great point with regard to the lock out nonsense. I clearly recall Bettman promising the game would become more affordable for the average fan if the salary cap was implimented. Anyone see ticket prices decline the past few years?
2) Additionally the salary floor tied to the cap without significant revenue sharing is self-defeating proposition. It was bound to fail the lower revenue teams and force the players to be yet again the scapegoats as to why those teams are losing money

This is simply the most honest article on Bettman to come out of Canada or anywhere else ever!

The only person to do something this crazy is someone that really loves hockey, wants it to be a truly national sport and has vision.  Look at the NHL draft the last few year and you see the US creeping closer and closer to Canada in total picks, this is lead by the growth in the sunbelt. Bettman has this vision, you apparently don’t.

I hope you are joking.

That little twerp has almost single handedly destroyed the destroyed the NHL.  Lockouts alienate fans.  The handful of fans down here in the South have all moved from elsewhere.  There are about 5,000 real hockey fans in North Carolina.  Can you successfully run even an ECHL team with that fan base?  Not on your tintype, sonny.  A franchise in the sunbelt must be able to attract casual fans or fans of sports in general.  Bettman, with the lockout, drove a lot of them away.

We now are hearing rumblings that Pete Karamanos, the owner of the Hurricanes is getting sick of bleeding dollars.  This is one of the success stories in the South, Bunky.

His lies to the owners keep building and building.  His stubborness at insisting a franchise stay in Phoenix where, unless they are playing the Red Wings, most fans come disguised as empty seats astounds me.  The league is bleeding money there.  That mess is now owned by the league.  It costs everyone, including his buddy Jeremy Jacobs millions of dollars to have that mess sitting in the closet of the league’s headquarters.  Buttman refuses to face reality that the team cannot earn its keep in Phoenix.

If I were a Canadian businessman who could afford to pay the losses it will cost him to own a hockey team, I would pursue the money losing mess in Tampa.  Even when winning the Stanley Cup, that franchise bled money.  Bill Davidson, a true hockey fan and as wealthy an owner as there has ever been in sports, dumped them and kept the Pistons, a woebegone message if there ever was one.

Places that want hockey franchises right now are in Canada and they are not all that many:  Quebec and Hamilton.  The only U.S. city that seems to maybe be capable of supporting a team is Kansas City, but this is probably a myth drummed up when the evil one was touting adding a team there.  I know they could not generate 9,000 paid admissions for an exhibition game with tickets selling at pre-World War II prices.

No, the NHL owners need to come to their senses this year and can the Garden Gnome.  A smart commissioner, like Brendan Shanahan is needed.  He will have his work cut out for him, but following a 10 year plan of orderly contraction, the next commissioner can put hockey’s house in order.
