Better In Buffalo

Spacek, in his first interview since becoming the Sabres' prized free-agent acquisition July 5, said Wednesday he had nearly identical offers from the Sabres and his former team, the Edmonton Oilers. Though the Oilers were one game away from winning the Stanley Cup, Spacek was quick to send a reminder that they needed late-season losses by Vancouver just to earn the No. 8 seed in the postseason. The Sabres, meanwhile, had the fifth-most points in the league. "I think that the team now in Edmonton will be not the same like last year," Spacek said by phone from the Czech Republic. "I was there for four months, and we had a great run in the playoffs, but we barely made the playoffs. We had to get big help from San Jose and Anaheim...."
