Or Winnipeg, he is from Manitoba, or Vancouver, or Philly or any other teams that needs a coach.

Lou says asst. coaches will remain.  New coach will have a voice in retaining or not.

That means Lane Lambert still is part of the NYI organization and could possibly be in the mix for head coach.

Safe to say he’ll be behind a bench somewhere next year. Wouldn’t complain in the least if it was Detroit. But yeah, I expect he’ll have plenty of options to pick from.

On Stevie’s birthday, no less.

Honestly I hope we don’t get him.

That’s bizarre, I’m confused?
This is two teams now that have walked from him.

Hmmmm. Are the Wings close enough to being competitive to attract Trotz? And even if they are, is this the guy Yzerman would be comfortable with? Things just got a lot more interesting.

Can’t wait to hear Kas’ take on this.

Good questions. I don’t think he will come to Detroit. Still rebuilding.

It seemed like nyi were dealt a tough hand with the impact covid had on their season. This is… Surprising to me. Concerning. We thought Washington walked away from him because they didn’t want to pay for him after the cup. But now this.

Add to that they are keeping the assistant coaches - those are Trotzs guys! If they wanted a fresh voice they’d be looking to clear the entire bench management.

A little odd. Maybe Lou just really wanted to coach… Again. wink

1) This is Yzerman’s guy to get is it not? Trotz is the demanding defensive coach Yzerman defined the other day, and frankly there are only 3-4 coaches in this league whose coaching actually elevates their team, Trotz is one. Disappointment if Yzerman doesn’t land him IMO.

2) Will Babcock be heading to NYI?

Pierre McGuire has suddenly become available.  He would be a nice fit in Detroit. And you would be doing hockey a favor by keeping him out of broadcasting.

As for the assistant coaches — a group that includes associate coach Lane Lambert and goaltending coach Mitch Korn, people who have worked with Trotz for a long period — Lamoriello would only say they were under contract for next season, though the new coach will have a say in whether that remains the case.

So, they are being kept for now....but the new coach has final say.

Maybe there was some worry on Lou’s part that SY would poach Lambert—but it makes no sense to not extend him unless you wanted to conduct a for the press benefit only head coaching search.

As for why?
NYI opened the season on a 13-game road trip because their new arena wasn’t quite finished for the season’s opening (due to a worry of being behind because of COVID). They were hit with a string of COVID-related absences (which got the Wings sick or was that last year?), and finally serious injuries derailed their season. They failed to make the playoffs and Lee and Nelson are in their early 30’s so they are at the end of their primes.—-And of course Rick DiPietro’s 1.5M buyout payout as a soon to be 41 year old is due in July (and will continue to be until July 2027)—so you need a competitive team with filled arenas—lol.

I would say Detroit would be almost a 3rd choice for Trotz:
the Flyers are in the Metropolitan Division (where he is very familiar),
the Jets because he is a the Manitoba native.

...but even Cheap Ilitch might be forced to give the okay to pay a coach after that Yzerman press conference….so who knows?

If Trotz isn’t the Wings top target: I’d like to know why…

BTW

Lou Lamoriello said improving the blue line from an offensive standpoint, and potentially a hockey trade involving forwards, would be on the table.

Zadina and/or Hronek swap for Wahlstrom and/or Bode Wilde/picks or other players…. Wings need a young centre and Wahlstrom was made a healthy scratch twice in the last couple weeks of the season. Plus he scored only three goals after the All-Star break. NYI also should have a top 15 pick this year.

Bode Wilde was sent to Sweden because he was unvaccinated and Connecticut had a vaccine passport program.

Zadina could use a change of scenery and Hronek is a young offensive minded d-man.

With any luck, Stevie stays far away from Trotz. We don’t need a coach who doesn’t handle young players very well.

Of course, all anyone has to do is ask Vrana, since he played under him the year the Caps won the cup.
