Barret Jackman Announces His Retirement

10/04/2016 at 3:02pm EDT

(Oct. 4, 2016) – Barret Jackman announced his retirement from the National Hockey League (NHL) today, after signing a one-day contract with the St. Louis Blues. Jackman leaves behind a 14-year career, during which he played in 13 seasons and over 800 games with the Blues.

Originally drafted by the Blues 17th overall in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, Jackman went on to dress in over 900 NHL games overall, including the first of his career, on Apr. 14, 2002, in Detroit. After receiving the #5 from original Blue Bobby Plager at his first Blues training camp, the Trail, British Columbia, native went on to represent the Blue Note for over a decade. He began his Blues career in historic fashion, becoming the franchise’s only Calder Trophy winner in 2003. Overall, he dressed in 803 regular season games with the club, accumulating 28 goals, 153 assists, 1,026 penalty minutes and a +53 rating. During that period (2002-2015), Jackman was one of eight defensemen overall to deliver over 900 hits and absorb over 1,200 opposing shots. He finished his Blues career following the 2014-15 season, before moving on to play his final year with the Nashville Predators.

In the Stanley Cup playoffs, Jackman appeared in 39 games with the Blues and scored two of the most memorable goals in recent Blues playoff history. In 2013, he scored the game-winning goal late in the third period in Game Two of the Blues’ first round series against Los Angeles. The following year, he repeated that performance, ending Game Two of the Blues’ first round series with Chicago in the first overtime period.

Jackman finished his career with 876 total regular season games, 186 career points and 1,102 career penalty minutes. In Blues history, he ranks second overall and first amongst defensemen in regular season games played, fourth overall in penalty minutes and 11th overall in plus/minus. Jackman also joins Hall of Famer Bernie Federko as the only players in Blues history to appear in 13 seasons with the organization.
