Banana Peel Tosser Meant No Racial Intent

from Jennifer O’Brien of the London Free Press,

The man accused of throwing a banana at black NHL player Wayne Simmonds during a preseason game in London last week had no idea about the racial overtone of bananas thrown at black athletes, lawyer Faisal Joseph said Wednesday.

Christopher Moorhouse, 26, is charged with a provincial offence, engaging in a banned activity under the Trespass Act.

“He is extremely remorseful and he is very concerned about his own personal safety because this has been played over the last several days as a racial hate crime and nothing could be further from the truth,” Joseph said.

“He never even thought of the connection between the banana and the player. His only genuine desire when he threw it on to the ice was to distract the opposing team from scoring a goal.”

With public outrage swirling over the case, London police Chief Brad Duncan urged people to resist vigilante action.

What a load of crap! This guy honestly expects us to believe that in 2011 the general public doesn’t know that tossing a banana at a Black person is viewed as a racist statement…based on the old racist belief that Blacks were considered more ape than human?
Give me a break! You did something that reflects what you believe…but you never thought you’d be hunted down and brought up on the carpet for it. You believed that people in your world would cover for you…so you felt safe in pulling off your disgusting stunt. And if you think that getting yourself a lawyer who happens to a man of ethnic background will save you…forget it. We see through that as a society as well. It’s like those guys who get charged with assaulting or raping women….or worse… and immediately go out and get themselves a female lawyer. We know who…and what…you are.

And that was his big mistake. Players should not cross the line and go into the stands and fans should not cross that line and involve themselves in the field of play. I also can’t believe he didn’t know the connection between banannas and racism. You’d have to have some serious tunnel vision in your life to not know the connection.

Wow, way jump at the chance to be judge, jury, and executioner… so many people saying they know what this guy was thinking; there must be a lot more psychics in the world than I thought.  Maybe he knew, maybe he didn’t… there are still people out there (and an increasing number of the younger generation) who aren’t hate mongers, you know.

Besides, whatever happened to “innocent until proven guilty,” or does that not apply in Canada?

And that was his big mistake. Players should not cross the line and go into the stands and fans should not cross that line and involve themselves in the field of play.

That’s the key, right there.  Whether or not it was “racially charged” it was a pretty dumb thing to do… I mean, in the end, he did it to himself whether it was bad timing or racism.

Hahaha! So now we know this idiot is a liar as well as a racist.
I’ve never seen banana’s sold in any arena so this moron planned to take that particular peice of fruit to the game.
Then he decided to throw it on the ice when a black player was performing in a shootout.
I didn’t see him throwing plumbs when a white player was on a breakaway.
And lets not forget the 2nd banana that was stopped at the glass.

This idiot and his racist buddies planned this out well in advance. And now that they’ve been caught they’re pulling the whole ignorant rap.

I’m glad this guys getting ragged for his stunt. Good. I hope he gets a pineapple thrown at him in traffic.

The guy’s either a racist or the unluckiest idiot in the world.

If I choose not to believe his line about not knowing the racist implications of his act, then it makes it easier to believe he’s lying when he says he’s a Wings fan who was just trying to help his team win a preseason shootout.

... you know, just like he was trying to help when the first banana got thrown AFTER Wayne Simmonds had scored a goal to tie the game.

Did you actually read the article?  He bought the banana at a stand in the arena.

You didn’t read it either though:

He (Joseph) said Moorhouse admitted he was responsible as soon as police contacted him, and has since provided a written apology to police and the NHL, and would like to apologize to the city and to Simmonds himself.”

I was referring to the “racism” part, not the banana-tossing part.

I would react much as many have, “How could he not know this?” but I told my wife about this incident and she didn’t immediately get it, either.  She’s from Europe, I’m from the South and was given a (sarcasm) healthy dose of racism with my bottle as a child.  Naturally, I now see things like this and cringe and feel guilty for being a part of a race and culture that would do something like this.  But someone who grew up without racist, and the sort of insidious influence they engender, might actually never get it.  Isn’t the goal supposed to be a world where we don’t notice the color of someone’s skin?

... Oh, who am I kidding?  He’s a liar and an idiot.  Sentence him, please.  Make an example.

Funny. Since this is almost common place in many European sports and hopefully not a trend we intend to import.

However, we can all agree the banana thrower proved his ignorance even if there is any measure of doubt about him being a racist..

I have no idea if this kid is telling the truth or not. Racists usually tend to lie when they get caught, and innocent people tend to protest their guilt when accused.

But as far as this whole “he had to know” line of thinking goes, when I saw the headline about the banana being tossed at Simmonds, my mind leapt to the cartoonish ‘slipping on a banana peel’ and figured that was the idea behind it.

The fact that he tossed the first banana may have been because he happened to be holding it when his team was scored on to tie the game with under 1 minute to play - I’ve almost thrown my beer without even thinking when I’ve been at a game when that happened. It sucks. Then maybe he thought it was funny and got another to toss out later.

Point is, none of us know jack about this dude and to paraphrase some christian lip service, judge not lest ye be judged, may he without sin cast the first stone, etc.
