The puck stayed live, and in a flash, Artemi Panarin ripped home a short-range one-timer to cut the Boston lead to 2-1. Nationwide Arena was all abuzz.

“I saw the puck go off,” said Jake DeBrusk, one of Boston’s five skaters in the trip to bizzaro world. “It was in my line of vision. I saw it, lost it . . . and I automatically assumed that it hit the mesh. I personally did not see it hit. But the way it reacted was iffy. I didn’t know if it was a hand pass . . . then all of a sudden it’s a backdoor [pass] to Panarin and I’m like, ‘What just happened?’”

The play, not reviewable by the on-ice officiating crew per the rule book, was allowed to stand. The two refs (Chris Rooney, Gord Dwyer) and two linesmen (Michel Cormier, Brian Murphy) simply didn’t see it. They are among the best eight eyes in the league’s call-’em-as-they-see-’em brigade, and they couldn’t call it because they couldn’t see it.

Note to NHL: time to fix the rulebook. If offsides and goalie interference are reviewable, surely a puck into the net fits into the spirit of wanting to get things right.

“Should have been blown dead,” said Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy. “Hit the net. You hope the four officials on the ice would see it, they didn’t . . . got to play through it.”
