Babcock Kick-Starting The Mule

from Bob Duff of the Windsor Star,

The roller-coaster ride that has been the production end of Johan Franzen’s game is beginning to grate on Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock, who believes it’s time that the veteran right-winger became a more consistent presence on the scoresheet.

“He’s like this,” Babcock said of Franzen, who has recorded 6-7-13 totals in his last eight games. “When he feels it, it goes in. To me, he should be one of the best power forwards in the league because of his hands, because of his skating, and he knows how to play. The challenge for him every night is to skate and be physical. If he skates and is physical, the rest looks after itself.

“He’s got one of the best shots in the league, and can wire it like nobody. Mule’s one of those guys that has to decide if he’s going to be a great player in the league, or a good player in the league for a long, long time. If he wants to be a great player, then you have to call on yourself every single night. The great players dig in every night.”

more on the Wings…

Correct me if I’m wrong, but it sounds like Duff is using Babcock quotes from several weeks ago (when the Wings were on their 6 game losing streak) to make a ‘new’ story today.  I know this exact quote was used in a story then:  “Mule’s one of those guys that has to decide if he’s going to be a great player in the league, or a good player in the league for a long, long time.”

I don’t know exactly when they’re from but they’re definitely not new quotes…

Here’s the original story, it wasn’t quite as long ago as I thought, but still 2 weeks ago with the exact same quotes.  Little late to the party there, Duff.

What makes this worse, Duff makes it sound as if Babock said this today or yesterday.

I dunno’.  I guess Franzen could be more consistent like Zetterberg, and be worthless and have 3 goals all year long so far…

How’s that for consistency?

Hasn’t this always been Franzen’s MO though?  Scorching hot for a week or two, ice cold the rest of the time.  Seems like it’s a bit late in his career to be expecting his game to change much.  How many guys put it all together at 31 after 6 years in the league?
