Babcock’s Bowling Statement

I used the following quote from Mike Babcock yesterday as my Afternoon Line and now you can hear it too.

Darn it, my intention was to post this in the Malik Report but I am moving like a zombie today.  Sorry.

When Uncle Mike says it like that versus what I read from the reports and articles, I get more depressed.

I think Uncle Mike meant to say he hopes the NHL can recover and be as popular as bowling.

Here are some numbers from the 2010-2011 season, particularly January 2011, because I found some info on bowling ratings from that time.

Bowling ratings:

“The ABC telecast of the PBA’s “Tournament of Champions” final produced a 0.8 Nielsen household rating, representing 871,000 households and 1.1 million viewers.”

“The rating, while slightly higher than the tour’s ESPN average the past two years, still has to come as a disappointment to the PBA, which heavily promoted the telecast.”

“Apparently the telecast wasn’t promoted enough, because a number of people I spoke to either forgot about the telecast or weren’t aware that it was airing on a Saturday.”

Here are the ESPN number for the PBA the past five years:

Season Rtg Households Viewers
2009-10 0.6 644,000 783,000
2008-09 0.7 749,000 912,000
2007-08 0.8 757,000 918,000
2006-07 0.8 710,000 871,000
2005-06 0.8 698,000 901,000

Here are the hockey ratings I dug up:

the NHL on Versus, which is averaging a 0.17 and 261,000 this season (39 telecasts through January 12).

Versus drew a 0.3 U.S. rating and 523,000 viewers for Penguins/Bruins January 10, despite competition from the BCS National Championship Game on ESPN. The game outdrew competing college basketball coverage on ESPN2 (ND/MARQ: 0.3, 491,000). According to Puck the Media, the game ranks as the third-most viewed NHL telecast on Versus this season.

I wonder how the NHL fared against Darts and foosball?

The NHL: More people watch games people play while drinking than our sport. Brought to you by the hockey-loving, sports-marketing labor-law geniuses of Proskauer Rose.

probably would have just been easier to say: bowling is on espn. NHL isn’t.

OLN/versus/NBCSN has struggled to gain traction. it probably gets more viewers for the tour de france than hockey.
