Things happen fast in hockey, including the offseason.

That became clear Tuesday afternoon, when a tweet by Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman about Blue Jackets left wing Artemi Panarin caused an instant commotion in NHL circles.

Friedman tweeted that Columbus is now testing the trade market for Panarin - who has a year left on his contract - in response to him reportedly telling the Jackets he's not interested in negotiating an extension yet.

Jarmo Kekalainen, the Blue Jackets' general manager, responded with a statement.

"Artemi is an elite National Hockey League player," the statement said. "Our position has been that we want him to be a Blue Jacket for many years and that has not changed. He has a year left on his contract, so there is plenty of time to work towards that end. Should anything change moving forward, we will address it at that time and any decision we make will be in the best interest of our club."
