By the Numbers: The first quarter of the 2019-20 NHL regular season, with comparitive stats through 317 games.

1,956 - Goals scored, the second-most in the last 23 years (2005-06: 2,007). The 6.2 goals-per-game rate also is the second-highest in that span (2005-06: 6.3).

1,462 - Goals scored at even strength in regulation/overtime, the most at this stage of a season in 27 years (1992-93: 1,529 EVG).

529 - Different skaters have scored at least one goal, amounting to 72.0% of all skaters (735) – the highest such percentage since 1993-94 (71.6%; 475 of 663 skaters).

160 - Point total that Leon Draisaitl (16-27—43 in 22 GP) is on pace to reach, a mark hit by only Wayne Gretzky (9x) and Mario Lemieux (4x).

148 - Average length of a regulation game, in minutes – the lowest since 2012-13.

140 - Comeback wins of any kind, amounting to nearly half of all games (44%).

87 - Overtime games, the most ever at this stage of a season.

83 - Combined points by Edmonton’s Leon Draisaitl (43) and Connor McDavid (40), the highest scoring teammates this season.

76 - NHL record for points in a season by a rookie defenseman (Larry Murphy in 1980-81) – Colorado’s Cale Makar (5-17—22 in 20 GP) is on pace for 90 points in 2019-20.

70 - Percentage of games decided by one goal or multiple goals with at least one ENG (222 GP), the second-highest such percentage in League history (72% in 2015-16 and 2018-19).

66 - Third-period comeback wins, the most ever at this stage of a season.

45 - Multi-goal comeback wins, second-most in NHL history behind last season (48 of 317 GP).

43 - Points by Leon Draisaitl, the most by the League’s leading scorer at this stage since Mario Lemieux in 1995-96 (22-31—53 in 19 GP).

40 - Challenges this season, 32% fewer than in 2018-19 (59; with nearly double the success rate: 58% in 2019-20 vs. 32% in 2018-19).

30 - Consecutive days with at least one comeback win from Oct. 12 to Nov. 10. Overall, 44 of 48 days this season have had at least one such victory (92%).

25 - Percentage of games that saw a team erase a multi-goal deficit (regardless of result), amounting to 79 games (the most in 26 years).

21 - Multi-goal, third-period comeback wins, the most ever at this stage of a season.

20 - Games needed for Washington’s John Carlson (8-26—34 in 23 GP) to hit the 30-point mark, one of five defensemen in League history ever to do so.

19 - Different players with a hat trick this season, for a total of 20 three-goal outings; Connor McDavid (2) is the only player with multiple.

18 - Age of Jack Hughes, Kaapo Kakko and Kirby Dach, the top three picks from the 2019 NHL Draft, who each have at least four goals in 2019-20.

16 - Number of players among the top 20 in NHL scoring who have yet to turn 30.

15 - Goals by eight-time goal-scoring leader Alex Ovechkin, third-most in the NHL behind David Pastrnak (17) and Leon Draisaitl (16).

14 - Longest point streak by a team this season, an active run by the Islanders (13-0-1) who also own the longest win streak by a team in 2019-20 (Oct. 12–Nov. 5: 10-0-0).

13 - Longest point streak by a player this season, achieved by David Pastrnak, Brad Marchand and Nathan MacKinnon. Leon Draisaitl takes a 12-game run into Tuesday’s action.

11 - Players scoring at a 100-point pace in 2019-20; the last season with that many 100-point players was 1995-96 (12).

7 - Countries represented among the NHL’s top 15 scorers (4 – United States & Canada; 2 – Sweden & Russia; 1 – Czech Republic; 1 – Germany; and 1 – Finland).

6 - Teams in a playoff position who missed the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs, including each of the top three teams in the Pacific Division (EDM, ARI, VAN; also: MTL, FLA, PHI).

6 - Most points by a player in a game, achieved Nov. 14 by Connor McDavid (3-3—6).

4 - Largest deficit overcome to win a game this season (achieved by WPG, WSH & FLA). Only four seasons in NHL history have had four or more games in which the winning team trailed by 4+ goals (5 each in 1983-84 and 1985-86; 4 in 1984-85 and 1986-87).

4 - Most goals by a player in a game, achieved four times (Anthony Mantha, James Neal, David Pastrnak & Jack Eichel) – equaling the total from the entire 2018-19 season.

3 - Consecutive years with a goals-per-game rate of 6.1 or higher – a first in 25 years.

2 - Age, in years, of Washington’s John Carlson the last time a defenseman recorded 100 points in a season (Brian Leetch in 1991-92) – he is on pace for 121 points in 2019-20.
