ASG Changes?

from Darren Dreger of TSN,

Fan voting would still be utilized to determine the game’s starters, while the NHL’s Hockey Operations department would select the rest of the weekend’s All-Star participants.

An interesting twist would see the appointed captains for each conference draft a team from the players selected from the larger group assembled by Hockey Operations.

NHL Vice-President of Hockey and Business Development Brendan Shanahan wouldn’t confirm details, but did say changes are being discussed and that the NHLPA is on board.

Ever since Gary.ASSG screwed over Datsyuk and Lidstrom in ‘08, I piss on the ASG.  Not worth my time anymore.

Dumb ideas for a dumb game. Please, let it die. And then tell the NBA and MLB to let their ASGs die, as well.

Whatever…as long as they don’t make it determine home ice advantage for the Stanley Cup Finals.

Forget making it an all-star game at all - because that way a lot of the same players go every year, and no matter how much they might enjoy it, they might like once in a while to go on vacation with their families.

If the league is DETERMINED not to let it disappear as the relic of a bygone age (my own personal preference), then make it instead of an all-star game more of a general exhibition game that is designed for the fans. Have each team send two players - but they don’t have to be stars. Choose players instead based on their extroverted personalities. They don’t have to be outstanding hockey players to interact with the fans, they just have to be decent and friendly. That way players who don’t want to go because they went the last two years already could skip it, anyone who was hurt could skip it, or someone who was too shy to enjoy meeting fans could skip it.

It would spread the burden around a bit more, give players who might be middle of the pack in talent but have a delightful sense of humor more exposure to fans, and make it more of a fun exhibition. It won’t matter as a game - it never will. The league should focus on something else other than “playing a hockey game with all-stars.”
