Are You Watching Or At Least Following The World Championships?

from Roy MacGregor of the Globe and Mail,

Sometimes you just need a little fix.

Not much, really, just a few minutes of puck possession, some unrestrained creativity, even a few familiar names in the air helps.

So thank you, world championship, for offering a welcome alternative every couple of days.

Let us not kid ourselves – Canada vs. France in an empty arena in Helsinki is certainly not Canada heading into overtime against a tough American team, nor is it a Game 7 with everything on the line – but at least it is not dump-and-chase, chip the pucks off the glass (or, just as often, over the glass), block the shots and crash the net endlessly.

It is hockey played differently, and for this reason alone it is refreshing, regardless of the final score.

Keep in mind, before NHL expansion, this evernt occurred after the Cup, not during the Cup.

Friends in Finland are raving about this tournament, and it has always had more support in Europe than NA.

To me it didn;‘t make a whole lot of business sense to hold this in Quebec during the SCP’s,
but I do watch, how often can you wake up, make a bloody mary, and watch Hank and Aflie and Franzen on the same team, or Pavel and Geno together.

I have been paying attention to the scores. Watched the US Canada game the other night on NBCSN. It was a good game, back and forth and from the US perspective was a nice win considering the US only had 3 wins over Canada in a bazillion years.

Until the league gets serious about goalie gear and or have a bigger nets get used to the rugby on ice. Its 1999 all over again the game is slipping and the ship is rudderless like it was back then. Maybe Bettman and company will bring the in the crease rule back to make sure every game is like a soccer game. Please Brendan Shanahan i will forgive you for being Bettmans lap dog, you had a vision after the lockout and forced the game back to its best. We need it again and now you have the power to do it. Shrink the goalies, bring the officiating back to where it was not so long ago. Please Brendan you are the only hope

They blew it back in the nineties when all those new arenas were built.  They should have mandated a phasing in of international sized ice in all new buildings.  The North American style of game on the European ice is my favourite kind of hockey.

I watch mostly out of boredom (live hockey on my TV at 9am Eastern?  Yes please).  But then again I was watching the KHL playoffs on XBox Live last year for the same reasons.

Fact is, the Worlds are a joke.  They play games in arenas to crowds that make Atlanta Thrasher crowds look enormous (”Mommy, why are all those sections of fans dressed as empty seats?”).  Most of the top teams feature some NHLers mixed in with guys not good enough for the NHL because they struggle to attract enough of the elite players to come over.  And they happen right smack in the middle of the SC Playoffs.

So yeah, I watch, but not out of any real respect for the tourney.  Neither USA nor Canada actually cares much about the tourney or their teams even, and that always shows through.

I watch, but that bigger ice surface doesn’t make the game any better if you don’t have all of your best players available does it? We hear every 4 years how great Olympic hockey is when US vs Canada are in the Finals, but not many people are watching France vs Japan.

For some reason, the game just seems slower on the big ice with less intensity, but then again it may be the empty seats that make the games seem less than compelling.
