Antti Ranta Signs A Three-Year Extension With The Arizona Coyotes

added 4:12pm, Arizona release is below...

GLENDALE, ARIZONA -- Arizona Coyotes President of Hockey Operations & General Manager John Chayka announced today that the Coyotes have signed goaltender Antti Raanta to a three-year contract. As per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

"We're extremely pleased to sign Antti to a three-year contract," said Chayka. "When we acquired Antti last summer, we believed that he had the talent and desire to become an elite starting goaltender and he certainly proved that this season. You can't be successful in this League without an outstanding No. 1 goaltender and now we have that with Antti. I'd also like to thank our owner Andrew Barroway for providing us with the resources to get this very important deal done."

"I'm thrilled to sign a new contract with the Coyotes," said Raanta. "The Coyotes believed in me and gave me an opportunity to prove that I could be a starting goaltender in the NHL. I'm very grateful for this and can't wait for next season. We have a great young team here and I'm very excited about our future in Arizona."

The 28-year-old Raanta has registered a 2.24 goals against average (GAA), .930 save percentage (SV%) and a 21-16-6 record in 46 games with Arizona this season. Raanta currently has the third-highest SV% (.930) and second-lowest GAA (2.24) in the NHL. Since January 4, Raanta has gone 16-5-4 and has posted the best SV% (.942) and GAA (1.83) among all NHL goaltenders. The veteran netminder has a 9-1-0 record with a .959 SV% and a 1.30 GAA with two shutouts in his last 10 appearances.

On April 1, the 6-foot, 195-pound Rauma, FI native was named the NHL's Second Star of the Week for the second time this season after posting a 3-0-0 record with a 1.00 GAA, .964 SV% and one shutout in three appearances. Raanta was named the NHL's Second Star for the week ending February 18 after recording a 3-0-0 record and a 0.90 GAA, .976 SV% and a shutout in four games.

Raanta was acquired by the Coyotes along with Derek Stepan from the New York Rangers in exchange for defenseman Anthony DeAngelo and the Coyotes' seventh overall pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft on June 23, 2017.

Not a horrible deal for AZ, though it’s curious they are spending money on a goalie when they aren’t going to be contending for anything for a long long time.

Raanta is sort of curious.  Definitely not young anymore, turning 29 in May.  He’s had some pretty consistent stats the last 4 seasons, but he hasn’t played much either.  He put up some good numbers with a bad Coyotes team this year though.

On the flip side, you have to wonder what Chicago’s situation would be like if they hadn’t traded Raanta to NY a few years ago and decided to go with Scott Darling.  He was only getting $1 mil a year in NY, so it’s not like they couldn’t have afforded him.  Raanta could have saved Chicago’s season consider Crawford’s situation this year.

Would have been a good deal for a backup role in Detroit.

Why would he take a backup role?

Why would he take a backup role?

I totally misread the contract and thought he signed for $4.25 total for 3 years and I assumed it’s for a backup role. Sorry for that.
