Answer This Question

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,

We assume the production people at Versus care about and are proficient at their craft, or else Comcast wouldn’t have kept them in their positions. Reasonable, correct?

So then why do Versus’ NHL telecasts remain amateurish and essentially unwatchable (please don’t cite the ratings as a rebuttal) in the network’s sixth year on the job?

VS has improved leaps and bounds since it started.  Can it be better?  Of course it can, but I find it hard to begrudge a network that once the NHL playoffs starts has two games on every night in HD and gives hockey more coverage than any other network.  I wish they would learn from CBC and TSN, but that goes for practically every US station that covers games.

This coming from Larry Brooks?  Seriously, is there a worse writer?

Versus has come a long way. Knocking them now makes no sense. It’s not like they have half as many stupid gimmicks as the NBC broadcasts.

I agree with Brooks.  Poor game description and production by Versus and NBC.  If you want the games to look like CBC or TSN telecasts, start with this…  let the play by play guy talk when the play is going on, then the color guy can comment when there is a break in action.  Don’t know how many goals I’ve seen scored where the analyst is jabbering about nothing and somebody puts it in the net.  Replay guys for Versus and NBC don’t know hockey.
