Another Listening Option

from TSN,

TSN RADIO 1050 is live on the air!

Mike Richards kicked things off for the highly-anticipated all-sports radio station, as THE MIKE RICHARDS SHOW went live in the Greater Toronto area on AM 1050 and nationally online at TSN.ca and on TSN MOBILE, at 5:30am ET this morning.

Richards, whose show runs weekdays from 5:30AM to 10AM ET, is just one of the attractions highlighting the station’s programming schedule. THE MIKE RICHARDS SHOW will be followed by a morning talk show hosted by veteran broadcaster Bryan Hayes. At Noon ET, Steve Kouleas hosts THAT’S HOCKEY 2DAY, a can’t miss show with the playoffs heating up. At 4:00PM ET, James Cybulski takes over for the afternoon drive slot, hosting CYBULSKI and COMPANY.

continued and to listen live...

1050 is the historic CHUM station, our first top-40 station which was the station who played Beatles, Elvis, etc.

Several years ago, they attempted to change from Oldies music radio (pre-70’s music) to the TEAM 1050.  As The CHUM/CHOM group are a major national network of stations, David Haidu (Geets in his radio show days with John Candy among many others) was brought in as the technical expert to setup their satellite/broadcast systems to allow national simulcast talk-shows.

I believe the technical upgrade process lasted longer than the actual format change.  The TEAM series of networks failed to garner the expected interest, and the station changed to a music format, where it continues to find relevance/audience along with any other AM music station.

This rebrand/format change promises to be a bit different.

Rogers Media bought parts of the CHUM/CHOM radio and TV empire.  Where the TEAM 1050 stuggled to get enough sports commentators to fill out their roster and compete with sports talk leader, the FAN 590, TSN Radio has tie-ins with the most reputable sports television broadcaster. Not to mention that Rogers also owns TSN’s biggest competitor, Sportsnet.

It will be tough to displace the FAN 590 for ratings.  Several, including the 1050 channel have unsuccessfully tried.  The difference this time is the brand recognition and reputation TSN already has.  They may actually be able to put up a fight.
