Another Side To The Jason Spezza Trade Request

from Ken Campbell of The Hockey News,

One thing in l’Affaire Jason Spezza that has become clear is that Spezza is no Dany Heatley. What isn’t so clear is whether or not Spezza actually asked for a trade out of Ottawa. Senators GM Bryan Murray maintains that Spezza did, those close to the player say that isn’t exactly the case.

According to sources close to Spezza, the scenario went down a little differently than it’s being portrayed. In his exit interview with Murray, Spezza laid his cards on the table. He told Murray that if the Senators were intent on a quick rebuild and were in the acquisition mode in terms of bringing in top-end talent, he wanted to be a part of it. But if the plan was to tear down the roster and rebuild the team with young players and draft picks, it might be best for the organization to maximize his value now and that he would not stand in the way of a deal involving him, provided it was not to one of the 10 teams in his modified no-trade clause.

Believe the spin that comes from Bryan Murray or Eugene Melnyk at your own peril. It’s Murray’s job to both do what Melnyk wants (run the Sens cheaply) and to sell these moves to the fans in such a way that they don’t turn on the organization for running itself in a way designed to milk maximum profitability from a market of suckers who believe they care about winning.

“Oh, Alfie wanted out. it’s too bad but we tried as hard as we could to keep him, but in the end he’s the bad guy because he left you, the fans.”

“Hey, Jason’s been great for us, but he told me he wants to be traded. Now I’m not going to be able to get as much value for him as I’d like, but if he doesn’t want to be here, what right do I have to keep him here? Woe is us.”

You beat me to it….I find it strange that both alfie and spezza are moving…like Z and Pav moving….they are not comparable….but the point is, there is something seriously wrong in that organization….

its so wierd how the senators have declined so rapidly. I remember when melynyk first became the owner he was spending to the limit and the sens were the best team in the NHL for a short while.  Then it went downhill so fast.  They had such a stacked team before, with alfie, spezza, heatley, chara, redden, havlat, all in their prime.

^^ Well, l’Affaire Biovail may have taken a little wind out of Eugene’s sails.

Let’s not pretend Spezza was being magnanimous here.  He may not have spoken the exact phrase “I want to be traded” but he did essentially give an ultimatum to a budget team which really gave them no choice, and he still gave them a list of one third of the league, to which he wouldn’t accept a trade.
