Another New NHL?

from Jesse Spector of The Sporting News,

How about a real new NHL this time?

It is clear that even with the implementation of a salary cap coming out of the last lockout, several teams simply cannot compete financially with the league’s heavyweights. So, why not cut the dead weight?

Contraction? No. Not only would shuttering franchises be a public relations disaster for the NHL, it would be needlessly cruel to the people who work and root for those teams. Besides, the NHL’s longstanding problem is that the poobahs of the sport shy away from big ideas.

So, here’s a big idea—one that would change not only the NHL, but the North American sports landscape: The NHL should start a second league, with promotion and relegation as seen in global soccer.

Without thinking about this proposal too hard, I like it. Mostly because all the games would count more and the teams competing for the Cup would be a higher quality.

This would be awesome. Relegation has proven to be extremely successful in in the EPL. I would love to see this implemented in the NHL, and I think it would be even better in college football.

I would love to see it too, but it’s never going to happen. Do we really think that owners are going to open themselves up to a scenario where their teams might not play in the NHL anymore? Columbus could be relegated and never come back up! Last season, the Montreal Canadiens would have been relegated!

Fun idea, but never gonna happen.

This would render the AHL completely obsolete

And it would also annoy the 8-10 NHL owners who paid 100-200+ million dollars for a franchise assuming one kind of system only to have it changed entirely.

It’s a ‘fun’ idea to kick around, but it would never happen in a hundred million years in the USA.

This is certainly an idea that would unite owners and players…...in opposition of course.
