Another Cup And The Chicago Blackhawks Are A Dynasty

from Rick Telander of the Chicago Sun-Times,

You win three Cups in five seasons, including possible back-to-back Cups? You’re a dynasty. Maybe you’re not the Shangs or the Mings, but you’re more than a hiccup.

Do the Blackhawks want to play the nasty Blues in the opening round, starting in St. Louis on Thursday night?

It doesn’t really matter. To win the Cup, you beat whomever steps in front of you for the next two months. At some point, you’ve beaten everybody who’s beaten everybody else....

It’s all doable. Not easy. But possible. Likely even painful. There’s a bull’s-eye on the chest of every Blackhawks star. They are the defending champs, after all. As Kane said of being singled out for special treatment by the Blues, “I would expect that, even if I wasn’t coming back from injury.’’

No, it’ll be hard, very hard. And long.

But no dynasty was easy. And none was built in a day.

Hey look!  A writer from City X is trying to convince everyone that team from City X is a dynasty or very close, because nobody else thinks so!

I would agree. Three cups in five years is noteworthy. I still hate them though, but give them their due.

I hope Rick eats his words one by one.

But the true hockey question is, “are they “elite”?

And I’ll need to go through the site archives to find the official answer to that one.

Telander referred to Toews as a defenseman.  Tells you all you need to know.

Here’s what a dynasty looks like….since 1990…

23 straight playoff appearances
8 Conference Finals appearances
6 Finals appearances
4 Stanley Cups
4 Head coaches
3 Captains

.... and counting….

Looks like Telander’s editor figured out what an idiot he is and corrected the story.

That makes it even funnier.

If they take it all this year, isn’t it two and a half cups?

When you’re not even a decade removed from sucking so bad that you get a 7th overall pick, two 3rd overall picks, and a first overall pick in a 4 year span only with the most homerific goggles could anyone consider a team a dynasty regardless of how much their winning.

You could save yourself time and just wait until TPSH pronounces that he NOW considers so-and-so a Hall of Famer.

I’m waiting to read the post this summer lamenting the sad fact that, once again, the Stanley Cup Champion is not an elite team. Again. Not since the Edmonton Oilers of the 1980s has there been an elite team to care about. Why bother watching at all….

If the 90s / 00s Wings can’t be a dynasty, Chicago can’t be a dynasty either even if they win the cup again (which I doubt they will). The Islanders and Oilers of the 80s were the last ‘real’ dynasties and the Wings were the closest thing to a modern dynasty. Hasn’t even been a back-to-back since the Wings did it.

To say that the Chicago hockey press has a gift for overreach would be charitable.
